Fire Safety Coordinator

Responsibilities Perform day‑to‑day operations of the fire safety program in accordance with legislation, standards and university policy. Conduct fire inspections of university‑owned or leased spaces, prepare inspection reports and recommend corrective actions. Review plans for new construction or renovations, consulting with Facilities, Architects and regulatory agencies to resolve issues. Coordinate and conduct annual fire drills in university‑owned buildings as required by legislation. Review and, when necessary, revise building fire safety plans; develop new plans for newly built or renovated buildings. Provide maximum occupancy limits for classrooms, laboratories, assembly areas and event locations based on Ontario building and fire codes. Advise the university community on fire safety matters and investigate complaints regarding violations of fire safety legislation and university policy. Investigate all fires and fire‑related incidents on campus or in university‑owned buildings, attend incident locations, and write incident reports with recommendations. Liaise with Kingston Fire & Rescue and other regulatory agencies: receive and respond to information requests; facilitate inspections, familiarization tours, and compliance notices. Coordinate and maintain the fire extinguisher inventory: update inventory, conduct annual inspections, coordinate hydrostatic test inspections (5‑12 years), and provide general training on portable fire extinguisher use. Coordinate annual inspection of sprinkler and standpipe systems in university‑owned buildings with Facilities and external contractors. Serve as a member of the university’s HAZMAT Team. Assist other departmental staff as required. Undertake additional duties as delegated to support the unit or department. Qualifications Two‑year diploma in fire protection or fire science technology with a minimum of two years of related experience. Familiarity with Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, NFPA standards, Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods legislation, CSA and ANSI standards. Good working knowledge of computers for word processing, spreadsheets, e‑mail and database management. Well‑developed oral and written communication skills. Completion of Queen’s WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods training. Valid driver’s licence. Physical capability to perform job duties. Supervision and Team Interaction May occasionally oversee the work of summer students or casual staff. Contact with administrative staff, researchers, technicians, graduate students, and external contractors is frequent. Liaison with Kingston Fire & Rescue for inspections, investigations, and follow‑ups. Frequent contact with Facilities staff for inspections and technical advice. Work Environment and Equipment Responsible for gas detection and monitoring equipment (≈ $25,000), hazardous materials response equipment (≈ $100,000), and a departmental truck (replacement value ≈ $55,000). Work may involve climbing ladders, accessing service spaces, and opening ventilation shafts. Exposure to pathogenic agents, carcinogenic chemicals, and standard hazardous chemicals; all activities follow safety procedures.
