Geotechnical Specialist Engineer – Transmission BC Hydro – Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada Hours of work: Full‑time (37.5 hrs/week) No. of positions: 1 We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Geotechnical Engineer in the Transmission Lines Engineering Division’s Geotechnical Design Team to act as the geotechnical owner‑engineer for new major transmission lines in the North Coast Region. The portfolio includes new lines such as the Prince George to Glenannan Transmission Project (PGGT), Glenannan to Terrace Transmission (GTTT), and Prince Rupert to Ridley Island Transmission projects. The role focuses on leadership, task management, and technical aspects of geotechnical engineering to lead the North Coast Transmission Line portfolio while coordinating internal and external consultant teams. What you’ll do Provide specialist level engineer services (EGBC Licensed P.Eng, Geological/Civil Discipline, Practicing Geotechnical/Geological Engineering and/or Geotechnical Hazards) to support capital construction and maintenance projects. Develop safe engineering solutions by applying initiative and judgement to design, analysis, and problem resolution for medium‑to‑highly complex assignments. Help manage and coordinate internal resources for the North Coast Portfolio and work closely with other owner‑engineer disciplines and external consultants. Deliver excellent customer service by communicating with stakeholders, defining scope, establishing design criteria, approving technical documentation, and reporting progress against standards. Make expert decisions on design bases, criteria, engineering standards, and resource management to support project completion safely, with quality, on budget, and on time. Undertake geotechnical analysis and design for structures associated with transmission overhead lines, stations, underground cable, and telecom assets, including foundations such as direct embedment, grillages, rock‑anchored pedestals, pile foundations, helical piles, strip and pad footings, cable vaults, duct banks, and ground anchors. Track engineering issues, establish project‑specific design practices, and develop guidelines for installation such as backfill for foundations. Investigate challenging problems, develop alternatives, evaluate risks, and apply innovative solutions. Provide active engineering support for site assessment, foundation design, soil and rock stabilization, ground improvement, geohazard assessment, and protective system design to mitigate risks to structures from natural hazards. Plan, manage, and coordinate surficial and subsurface investigations to establish geotechnical ground conditions and assess geohazards that may impact existing or future assets. Carry out Professional of Record duties on select assignments, provide owner‑engineer reviews and oversight (office and field), and undertake emergency/forensic engineering work. Prepare investigative, analytical, and recommendation reports for internal and external stakeholders. Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field and conduct field reviews as required by EGBC. Design existing and new facilities and develop monitoring strategies across the province. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and review functions on geotechnical analysis and design work by team members to meet EGBC compliance requirements. Prepare work packages, including scope, duration, and level‑of‑effort estimates. Implement field review plans and monitor construction activities. Work in a hybrid office setting (Edmonds Office – Burnaby) and in the field, requiring a minimum of three days in the office and short field assignments across BC. What you bring A degree in Civil or Geological Engineering recognized by Canadian universities. At least 10 years of experience in civil or geological engineering design within the utility industry, focusing on geotechnical/geo‑engineering; hydrotechnical experience is an asset. Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with EGBC (Professional Geoscientists registration is an asset). Ability to manage complex problems, provide subject‑matter expertise, and act as a senior role model; potential to lead a sub‑function of the team. Familiarity with BC Hydro projects and engineering design practices, or similar experience with other utility companies (e.g., evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design basis, hazard logs, test plans).
