Transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning.
The University Health Network (UHN), where “above all else the needs of patients come first”, encompasses Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and the Michener Institute of Education at UHN. The breadth of research, the complexity of the cases treated, and the magnitude of its educational enterprise has made UHN a national and international resource for patient care, research, and education. With a long tradition of groundbreaking firsts and a purpose of “Transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning,” UHN, Canada’s largest research teaching hospital, brings together over 16,000 employees, more than 1,200 physicians, 8,000+ students, and many volunteers. UHN is a caring, creative place where amazing people are amazing the world.
The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has 12 site groups and 26 specialty clinics, and almost 3,000 staff who see over 400,000 patient visits every year. Its 800,000 square feet house 130 inpatient beds, 373,000 square feet of research space and 17 radiation treatment machines, making it one of the largest comprehensive cancer treatment facilities in the world and the largest radiation treatment centre in Canada.
As a member of the Interprofessional Genitourinary (GU) Radiation Oncology Team, the nurse practitioner (NP) functions in an expanded role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to manage the care and navigation required for patients referred to the GU Site at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
Principal responsibilities include providing care to patients referred for management of GU malignancy, including independently and also collaboratively leading new patient consult/repeat consult, review and follow up clinics alongside a Staff Radiation Oncologist. The NP will also collaborate with Research and Education leads to aid in the screening and recruitment of patients to relevant trials. There may be opportunities to expand into other clinical domains including aspects of brachytherapy, radiotherapy and systemic therapy (including radionuclide / theranostics) as these pertain to GU cancer management. The NP will work within the multi-disciplinary GU team within the Princess Margaret as well as referring institutions to provide patient education, psychosocial support and optimize the navigation of GU cancer patients along the cancer journey and seamless transitions of care.
Additional principal responsibilities include utilizing and demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and an advanced level of clinical competence in caring for GU cancer patients. This will involve collecting and interpreting data about the health history of the patient, performing pertinent physical exams, facilitating discussions surrounding the role of radiation therapy in GU cancer, educating patients regarding potential treatment side-effects and management, treating complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems, leading follow up care, and discussing survivorship care issues. The role and responsibilities may evolve over time as this is a new role within the Radiation Medicine Program; however, the core principals will remain as described above.
Other responsibilities include academic and leadership activities, including leading, coordinating and participating in research and/or quality improvement activities, orienting and educating new NPs and members of the interprofessional team and participating in ongoing professional development activities. The successful candidate will require clinical knowledge and skills to care for patients, but also a level of comfort with ambiguity while establishing role clarity within the GU site group and the continued expansion of the GU Radiation Oncology Program.
The NP will report directly to the Director of Professional Practice, Princess Margaret.
In addition to working alongside some of the most talented and inspiring healthcare professionals in the world, UHN offers a wide range of benefits, programs and perks. It is the comprehensiveness of these offerings that makes it a differentiating factor, allowing you to find value where it matters most to you, now and throughout your career at UHN.
