The Canadian Labour Congress has vacancy for a National Representative within the Political Action and Communications department. This position is based at CLC’s headquarters located in Ottawa, Ontario with the expectation of regular presence in the office to help facilitate collaboration with colleagues, management, and the leadership team.

The successful candidate will report to the Director, Political Action and Communications.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Media Relations:
Working with the media coordinator to advance the organization’s proactive and reactive media communication strategies;
Developing and maintaining relationships with media contacts across platforms and outlets;
Developing messaging, speaking notes and briefings for CLC spokespeople;
Writing and placing public statements, news releases, opinion pieces, and articles; and
Assisting in media strategies with affiliated unions, policy makers, and influencers.

Content Creation:
Help build and execute social media strategy;
Generate, edit, publish, and share daily content (original text, images, videos, etc.);
Review, monitor, moderate, and respond to comments posted across social media channels;
Crafting social and media content, and creating content for email and outreach campaigns;
Working with regional staff to ensure materials produced satisfy the needs of ground organizers;
Drafting, maintaining, and updating research documents for use by the CLC, as the basis of many different facets of member and external communications; and
Writing various summaries and briefings, and ensuring pertinent information is included.

General Duties:
Collaborating with the broader Political Action and Communications team to conceptualize and write campaign materials such as digital tools, social posts, letters, and engagement scripts;
Tracking and maintaining effective messaging practices for statements, actions, and other engagement documents;
Interacting with affiliated unions to broaden support for Canada’s labour movement and amplify shared messages; and
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following:

Completed post-secondary education in communications, journalism, political science, public relations, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience;
Minimum of three years of experience in crafting written content for public relations and/or media work;
Excellent interpersonal skills required to work and communicate with internal staff, CLC elected leaders, stakeholders, and affiliated unions;
Demonstrated superior media writing and messaging skills;
Demonstrated ability to adjust tone and arguments for a variety of audiences;
Ability to assess political issues and identify relevant information;
Ability to think strategically and independently;
Ability to coordinate multiple tasks with conflicting duties and timelines, envision deliverables, and balance workflow to meet deadlines;
Ability to anticipate problems and respond with solutions;
Sound knowledge of federal issues and the Canadian labour movement;
Ability to apply an equity and human rights lens to all aspects of work;
Experience working on targeted ad buys in radio, television, print, online and social media is an asset;
Experience working in the labour movement is an asset; and
Ability to work in both English and French (written and oral) is an asset.

The annual starting salary for this position is $98,649.38 , along with comprehensive benefits under the IAMAW, Local Lodge 3111 CULR collective agreement. Benefits include health, vision, and dental coverage, group life insurance, LTD coverage, pension contributions, as well as a monthly vehicle allowance with coverage for fuel, internet, and cell phone expenses.
