Interim Financial Controller (1-year Maternity Cover)
We are looking for a CPA to lead the Finance organization at MEOPAR
Are you interested in working with a positive, collaborative team that is on the cutting-edge of Canadian Marine research? Perhaps you are a seasoned Financial Controller looking for non-profit exposure, that would like to contribute to Canada’s marine sustainability efforts, or are a young professional seeking experience that builds your resume quickly, gaining an exceptional breadth of experience that you just can’t get in larger organizations?
The Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR) is seeking a CPA to join our leadership team as Interim Financial Controller for a one-year contract. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Financial Controller is a strategic financial leader and advisor. You will work closely with the Board of Directors, host organizations, member academic institutions, award recipients, and other stakeholders, ensuring that financial risks and issues are identified and managed, and that MEOPAR’s financial management and compliance processes are running smoothly.
MEOPAR is a not-for-profit network, funded by the Strategic Science Fund, focused on supporting leading-edge marine research and connecting top researchers across Canada with highly qualified personnel, partners, and communities. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional accountant who is also passionate about sustainability, responding to climate change, and environmental consciousness.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting the Finance and Audit Committee and the broader Board of Directors by reporting regularly on the organization’s financial position, performance, and other financial matters, as required.
- Serving as a professional advisor to senior leadership and the board, identifying, assessing, and managing financial risks, issues, or opportunities.
- Maintaining positive collaborative relationships with partners, host institutions, the research community, government, and other key stakeholders.
- Contributing to a positive, healthy, and safe work environment, providing proactive and positive support to MEOPAR Administration Staff.
- Overseeing and managing core accounting processes, including budgeting, financial reporting, accounts payable and receivable, and treasury, and ensuring that financial policies and guidelines are met.
- Working closely with MEOPAR staff to oversee the allocation and monitoring of funding research and program budgets, ensuring that the organization meets all SSF, legislative, and other requirements.
- Providing direction on internal service requirements, such as legal services, and overseeing the work of external providers, as required.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- A CPA designation is required.
- 7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management, ideally in a leadership or senior management role.
- Experience working with senior leadership teams and boards.
- Experience working with a research or not-for-profit organization.
MEOPAR operates in both of Canada’s official languages. Therefore, preference will be given to candidates with proficiency in both English and French. Please note language proficiency in your cover letter or CV.
Why Work at MEOPAR?
- Work with a passionate team dedicated to advancing marine research.
- Contribute to having a positive impact on Canada’s marine environment.
- Be part of a collaborative and inclusive work culture.
- Grow and develop professionally.
- Be compensated fairly and competitively - MEOPAR pays in line with the Canadian government’s salary scales and offers a comprehensive benefits plan and generous leave allowance.
MEOPAR is a Canada-wide employer - this position is open to candidates across Canada on a remote work basis.
Interested applicants are invited to submit their CV and cover letter, quoting “Interim Financial Controller” in the subject line to suzanne.ives@meopar.ca.
MEOPAR is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to equity and diversity within its community and promotes a work environment of mutual respect and inclusion. We welcome and encourage applications from racialized persons/visible minorities, women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities. Applicants with atypical backgrounds are encouraged to include details of their learning experiences in the cover letter accompanying their CV. In accordance with Canada’s immigration requirements, priority will be given to qualified candidates with Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
