Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse - Orthopaedic and Spinal Ward You will provide strong clinical leadership within a busy surgical ward, ensuring safe and effective care for patients recovering from orthopaedic and spinal surgery while supporting the development of the nursing team. Main duties of the job The post holder will provide strong clinical leadership and deliver high-quality, patient-centred care to adults recovering from elective and complex orthopaedic and spinal procedures. They will support the Ward Manager with the effective day-to-day running of the ward, ensuring safe staffing, clinical oversight, and adherence to professional standards. The role requires expert knowledge in post-operative orthopaedic and spinal care, including pain management, wound care, early mobilisation, patient education, and the management of clinical risks. The post holder will act as a role model, support junior staff through supervision and teaching, and contribute to service improvement within a busy surgical environment. Job responsibilities Deliver expert post-operative care for orthopaedic and spinal patients, including pain management, wound care, and early mobilisation. Support junior nurses and healthcare assistants through supervision, teaching, and competency assessment. Oversee patient assessments, documentation, medication safety, and escalation of concerns. Work collaboratively with physiotherapists and other professionals to optimise patient recovery. Contribute to clinical audits, service improvement projects, and governance activities. Support staffing coordination, induction, and the development of the ward team. Promote a positive culture that reflects the values of The London Clinic. Skills and Experience Registered Nurse Adult with substantial experience in orthopaedic and spinal inpatient care. Experience in orthopaedic and spinal nursing is essential for this role. Confident taking charge of shifts in a high-paced clinical environment. Skilled in post-operative assessment, wound care, analgesia management, and mobility planning. Effective communicator with strong leadership and organisational skills. Able to supervise, coach and support junior staff. Committed to delivering safe, high quality, patient-centred care. Qualifications Registered Nurse Adult. Evidence of ongoing professional development. Post registration training in orthopaedics or surgical care. Experience Significant post registration experience in acute surgical nursing. Experience taking charge of a ward or unit. Experience in complex wound care, pain management, IV therapy, and post-operative care pathways. Experience in an orthopaedic or spinal inpatient ward. Experience supervising and developing staff. Participation in audit or service improvement initiatives.
