Role and Facility Information SPH’s Emergency Medicine Department is hiring Emergency Medicine Physicians and locums for up to 30 shifts per month. SPH is a 65‑bed acute care community hospital with an 18‑bed Emergency Department that serves approximately 31,000 patients per year, both pediatric and adult. It is the primary referral hospital for the Southern Gulf Islands, serving a population of about 87,000. Our ED is staffed by 16 full‑time and part‑time physicians on five shifts per day with 12‑hour double coverage. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care, and Anesthesiology are available during daytime hours, with additional specialists in the community. Tertiary care support and consultants are within 30 minutes by road at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laboratory services run 24/7, and Medical Imaging—including a CT scanner—operates 07:30–24:00 daily plus on‑call overnight. Physicians must be comfortable in a single‑coverage department without on‑site Respiratory Therapy or ICU support. Affiliation with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program provides regular teaching opportunities to medical students and residents. Additional Information Applicants must be eligible for CCFP‑EM or FRCPC Emergency Medicine and hold licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. The group seeks candidates with community hospital ED experience, flexibility in scheduling, and availability to fill crisis call volume and acuity work. The successful candidates will enjoy flexibility in scheduling and a fantastic lifestyle on beautiful Vancouver Island. Community Information Located north of Victoria, the Saanich Peninsula lies within the territories of the Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tsawout, and Tseycum First Nations and includes the municipalities of Central and North Saanich and the City of Sidney. As of 2019, the population was 70,356 with 20% identified as immigrants, 15% age 75+, 9.8% visible minorities, and 5.4% Indigenous. The area offers a mix of rural, urban, and farming communities and abundant outdoor recreation, including golfing, hiking, cycling, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, and fishing.
