About the Role Level: A Reports to: Associate Professor Fatemeh Vafaee No direct reports Compensation & Terms Salary: $113K - $121K, plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading Fixed term: 10 months Part time: 35 hours per week Responsibilities Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research aimed at enhancing the quality of research outcomes. Collaborate in multidisciplinary research at the intersection of biology, medicine, and computational science, effectively coordinating outcomes with stakeholders. Foster innovation by developing novel approaches and leading research initiatives, ensuring consistent delivery of impactful results. Conduct research and support research teams to create scholarly output recognised by peers. Undertake specific research projects under guidance and contribute to research activity development. Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels. Undertake literature reviews, data collection, methodology development and validation, analysis, and result generation. Participate in and present at conferences and workshops as required. Assist with supervision of research students where required. Align with the Code of Conduct and values. Cooperate with health and safety policies and procedures. Qualifications & Selection Criteria A PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related discipline, or equivalent experience. Experience in analysing and interpreting omics datasets, with expertise in AI and machine learning methodologies. Experience in analysing single-cell and multi-omics data, and understanding of underlying biological principles. Proficiency in implementing and optimizing modern AI models (e.g., BERT, GNN, VAE, GANs, GPT, LLMs). Hands‑on experience with NGS bioinformatics pipelines and analytical workflows. Commitment to staying up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision. Track record of publications and conference presentations. Strong teamwork, collaboration across disciplines, and effective relationship building. Highly developed interpersonal skills. Communication skills for diverse stakeholders and students. Understanding and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values.
