Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the President and Vice-Chancellor, the General Counsel is responsible for protecting the university’s legal interests, managing legal risks, and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.

Key responsibilities of this position include providing legal advice on governance, policy, and risk management, overseeing external legal counsel, representing the university in litigation, and managing privacy and compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). The role supports senior leadership in strategic decision-making, handles complex legal issues across various domains (e.g., contracts, employment, equity), and manages external legal fees and contracts. The General Counsel is also responsible for responding to inquiries from regulatory bodies or agencies as required and oversees obligatory reporting requirements.

The General Counsel must have a law degree, extensive legal experience, strong communication and leadership skills, and the ability to make independent, high-impact decisions across the entire spectrum of the University’s operations. The successful candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of leadership practices in people management, strategic planning and risk management, policy development, financial management and stakeholder relationship management.
  • Broad legal expertise across the full spectrum of legal and regulatory issues, including, but not limited to corporate, contracts, IP, litigation, labour, employment, human rights, construction, real estate, charity, education, sexual violence, harassment and free speech.

Education and Experience:

  • Law degree (LLB or JD), from an accredited Canadian university.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience as counsel.
