Job Summary: The Second Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Engine Department personnel and operation and maintenance of machinery, in line with the Chief Engineer’s directions. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer is responsible for safe standards of operation in all departmental activities and is expected to perform his or her duties in accordance with the Canada Shipping Act and Regulations, Canada Labour Code, Company Policies and Procedures. This position is unionized. Wages and benefits will be paid as per union agreement. Job Responsibilities: Accepts directions from the Chief Engineer in terms of guidelines and objectives. Ensuring documentation of all maintenance carried out is kept up to date in the planned maintenance system and/or the vessel. Supervising the safe, efficient and economical operation of the Engine Room Department. To meet these objectives, s/he has authority over the junior Engineers and unlicensed personnel and is responsible for their training. Upkeep of all machinery and equipment for which the Engine Room Department is responsible. Maintenance and upkeep of the main propulsion machinery, including fuel and lubricant piping and pumping systems, purifiers, steering gear, control systems, hydraulic systems, CPP systems, oily water separators and incinerators. S/He is also responsible for the testing, maintenance, and recording of ME jacket water chemical additives and for the collection, submission and recording of regular lube oil samples from all applicable Engine Room machinery. Purification of bunkers to maintain a sufficient supply of fuel to main and auxiliary machinery. Pumping of machinery bilge spaces, in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Vessel Pollution Prevention and Dangerous Chemicals Regulations and Marpol 73/78, and as detailed in SM03 Engine Room Procedures. Maintaining records of Engine Room stores and spares expended, received, or on hand. Monitoring work performed and recorded under the Planned Maintenance Program to ensure an accurate record of work carried out on all machinery in the engine room, or in other isolated compartments and on deck. Security duties as per Vessel Security Plan. Qualifications: Second-Class Engineer, Motor Ship (or higher) issued by Transport Canada Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate STCW Certificates (Basic Safety, Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, Advanced Fire Fighting) Advanced training for Oil Tanker Cargo Operations Propulsion Simulator – 2 Shipboard Personnel with Designated Security Duties Valid Canadian Passport or Canadian Permanent Residency C1/D VISA (if applicable) Skills, Abilities, and Experience: Minimum 2 years of recent experience working on tanker vessels Experience with Safety Management Systems Excellent leadership skills Excel in analyzing and adjusting work procedures for maximum efficiency Knowledge of the English language is required Transport Canada has signed reciprocal arrangements with the following countries to accept and recognize their STCW certificates: Australia France Georgia Ireland Jamaica Norway Republic of Panama Republic of the Philippines United Kingdom Ukraine Algoma Central Corporation encourages application from designated group members identified under the Federal Employment Equity Act.
