OverviewPOSITION TYPE FULL-TIME, CASUAL (Days, Evenings, Overnights, Weekends)The Opportunity: Velmas House is an Indigenous led, low-barrier safe space for women and gender diverse folks who are unsheltered, experiencing sexual exploitation or gender-based violence. Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Heart Helpers are responsible for the day-to-day interactions with relatives that are accessing the safe space and variety of resource offered. Our safe space serves a place of comfort, connection, and safety, with an emphasis on meeting the immediate safety needs of those who need it most, when they need it most. Responsibilities Walking alongside relatives that are accessing Velmas House with respect, care, and anticipation that each participants needs will be diverse and unique Fostering clear, kind, and professional participant relationships Responsible for tracking and maintaining accurate statistics Assisting in system navigation, and advocacy work Demonstrating knowledge on strict consent and confidentiality Following organizational safety protocols, completing incident reports, and donation procedures Facilitating health supports including access to in-house physicians and nurses, Elders and Knowledge keepers, ceremony, traditional medicines and cultural teachings Providing participants services: shower and washroom facilities, nutritious meals, laundry, hygiene and wellness supplies, harm reduction supplies, emergency clothing and donations Qualifications Understanding of issues related to mental health, gender-based violence, problematic substance use; sexual exploitation Comprehensive and current knowledge of resources and systems within Winnipeg Commitment to cultural reclamation practices and Ways of Being, Two-Eyed Seeing Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and written Strong understanding of harm reduction principles and trauma informed care Understanding on systems of oppression, able to apply anti-oppression measures Strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion; including issues impacting the 2SLGBTQ+ community Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams) Team player who is able to work safely and collaboratively in fast-paced and high-needs environments You Have… 1-3 years of related training (mental health, social work, family studies, gender-based violence, substance training, community health, etc.), work and community experience, and combined lived experience are all valued Satisfactory completion of recent (as of the last 6 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search; Child Abuse Registry Check; Adult Abuse Registry check Current Emergency First Aid Certificate and CPR Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or related Crisis Management Training is an asset Mental Health First Aid and ASIST training is an asset Valid Manitoba Class 5 Drivers License and access to a vehicle are considered assets How to Apply Please send a cover letter and a resume to employerrep@abcentre.org.
