Responsibilities Instruct apprentices Troubleshoot and inspect equipment to detect faults and malfunctions Diagnose faults or malfunctions using computerized and other testing equipment to determine extent of repair required Order parts and maintain inventory Adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts Keep maintenance reports and documentation Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturers' specifications Clean, lubricate and perform other maintenance work Perform repair work on heavy trucks Service attachments and working tools Verify and repair emission control systems Specialization Diesel engine repair – fuel injection, exhaust, cooling, air conditioning, lubrication, engine control, major internal engine repairs or overhaul, engine/machinery installation and alignment. Powered equipment repair – cable‑operated attachments, hydraulic‑operated attachments, compressors, pumps, telescopic ladder, electric generators, industrial lift trucks and fork‑lifts. Mechanical maintenance and repair – mechanical transmissions, drive trains, hydraulic transmissions, power take‑offs, tracked vehicle suspensions, wheel‑mounted vehicle suspensions, highway vehicle tires and wheels, differentials, brake system. Work Conditions & Physical Capabilities Physically demanding Attention to detail Bending, crouching, kneeling Hand‑eye coordination Handling heavy loads Manual dexterity Standing for extended periods Weight Handling More than 45 kg (100 lbs).
