An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience.While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in:Gathering patient historiesPerforming physical examsCreating treatment plansDiagnostics and dentistry servicesObserving, assisting, or performing surgical proceduresMedical management of patientsExterns will also have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. These programs are designed for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students.Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend.
