Organizational Description: NorWest Co-op Community Health Centre has served the Inkster community in northwest Winnipeg since 1972. NorWest is a forerunner in taking a multi-service, holistic, team approach to health care. We provide a wide range of health related services including medical care, counselling, education and community outreach. Volunteer Opportunity Details Volunteer Opportunity ID: 6084 Description of Duties: Baby Steps is a free and welcoming program for pregnant women and new parents to connect with other parents, babies and health care professionals. The program provides a safe, supportive environment to share experiences, learn about healthy child development, and access community resources. The Baby Steps Assistant supports program staff in creating a friendly, clean and engaging space for parents and their children. Volunteer assists with food preparation, activity setup, and child‑minding, helping to ensure a positive experience for all participants. Key Responsibilities Assist with program setup and cleanup, including play areas, toys, and activity materials. Support food preparation and serving while following food safety and hygiene protocols. Maintain cleanliness and sanitization of kitchen and activity spaces. Help with child‑minding for older children during program sessions. Greet participants, provide information to first-time guests, and assist with registration. Engage positively with families and refer questions to staff or service providers when needed. Support staff with distributing surveys or collecting participant feedback. Work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers, taking initiative as needed. Record volunteer hours and check in with staff before leaving. Skills Required Friendly, caring, and compassionate with an interest in supporting families. Enjoys working with infants, children, and parents/caregivers. Punctual, reliable, and able to commit to one shift per week. Comfortable assisting in the kitchen and following food safety practices. Respectful, nonjudgmental, and aligned with NorWest's vision, mission, and values. Outgoing and willing to take initiative in a team setting. Criminal Record Check and Child & Adult Abuse Registry Checks required. Food Handler Certificate preferred but not required. Skills Gained/Related Careers Experience in child care and family support Exposure to community health and social services Practical skills in community program delivery and development Teamwork and communication skills in a professional environment Time Commitment: Daytime – Wednesday 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm Location: Winnipeg – Inkster Criminal record check required – Yes Child abuse registry check required – Yes Opportunity is available to candidates that: Fulfilling volunteer hours for school credit or Required to complete community service. Organization will provide: a letter of reference, supervision, training/orientation.
