Postdoctoral Fellow, Ionizing Radiation Standards National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada Priority may be given to the following designated employment equity groups: women, Indigenous Peoples* (First Nations, Inuit and Métis), persons with disabilities and racialized persons*. City: Ottawa Organizational Unit: Metrology Research Centre Classification: RO Tenure: Term Duration: 2 years Language Requirements: English Work arrangements: Due to the nature of the work and operational requirements, this position will require full‑time physical presence at the NRC work location identified. The Program The NRC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program offers access to unique world‑class facilities and the opportunity to work alongside multi‑disciplinary teams of expert researchers and technicians on projects of critical importance to Canada. Fellows will carry out research on innovative projects, with opportunities for career development (publications and/or industry interaction). Fellows will be offered term appointments, salaries and benefits commensurate with Research Officers. As a guide, the current annual Ph.D. recruiting rate is $83,985. Fellows will also receive a travel fund to support their work. Project Title Clinical translation of a pyroelectric calorimeter Role NRC is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to develop a clinically viable pyroelectric calorimeter for ultra‑high dose‑rate (FLASH) radiation therapy. FLASH offers the potential for improved cancer treatment outcomes but dose measurement challenges due to extreme dose rates limit the clinical translation of this emerging therapy. Building on NRC’s leadership in radiation standards and absorbed dose calorimetry, this project will create a novel detector that leverages the temperature‑dependent polarization of pyroelectric materials to measure absorbed dose in real time. The Fellow will optimize sensor materials and designs, refine calibration methods, and validate performance under clinically relevant conditions using state‑of‑the‑art equipment at NRC and Canadian partner clinics. The work will generate new detector technologies, publications, and potential intellectual property, advancing both clinical translation and national measurement capabilities. Education Ph.D. in Medical Physics or a closely related field. Experience Significant experience using experimental techniques and radiation detector development. Experience with accelerator‑based dose measurements or Monte‑Carlo radiation transport simulations is required, although experience with both is preferred. Language Requirements English Condition of Employment Reliability Status: Verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required. Eligibility Fellowships will be for two years contingent on satisfactory progress achieved during the first year. Candidates should have obtained a Ph.D. (or equivalent) within the past three years (Ph.D. received on or after July 1, 2023) or expect to complete their Ph.D. within 6 months of appointment. Fellows will work in a lab under the direct supervision of an NRC researcher. Exceptions may be considered to recognize personal or family related leave. Application Requirements Resume Statement of Interest in the project (maximum one page in length) Ph.D. transcript – an electronic copy is sufficient. List of publications Three letters of recommendation (will be requested later) Compensation The intended salary range is $83,985 to $116,641, based on prior experience. The NRC provides a robust pension plan, comprehensive health and dental coverage, disability and life insurance, and other benefits. Notes Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with NRC directives. Fellowships are open to nationals of all countries, although preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The incumbent must adhere to safe workplace practices at all times.
