Manager, Credit Control Effectiveness – Credit Risk Strategy, Canadian Banking at Scotiabank Purpose Contributes to the overall success of Canadian Commercial Bank. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Credit Control Effectiveness, the Manager supports the Commercial National Office in ensuring individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed and delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. All activities are conducted in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures. Responsible for participating in and/or co‑leading assigned project reviews to ensure Commercial Banking groups and teams comply with credit and operational processes. Engages with internal partners such as Commercial Banking 1A teams, GRM, BBO, Legal, Audit, etc., to understand processes and clarify potential gaps, with the intended outcome of ensuring process standardization and optimization across the Commercial Banking platform. Accountabilities Primarily responsible for providing effective challenge through reviewing and testing the design and operating effectiveness of Credit and Operational processes in Commercial Banking. Supports regular communication with Banking and GRM teams to disseminate credit and operational process changes, compliance trends, and coaching opportunities by preparing presentation decks and/or leading portions of meetings. Provides support to process/project owners to ensure initiatives and process changes are implemented efficiently, meeting audit, compliance, and operational standards to minimize risk to the bank. Champions a customer‑focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader bank relationships, systems, and knowledge. Credit And Operational Project Reviews Participate in assigned project reviews, ensuring scope of work aligns with approved plan, timing, and budgeting. Review and test various processes to assess design and operating effectiveness. Assist the lead in diagnosing root causes of findings through discussions with stakeholders, reviewing controls, and assessing current systems. Identify and drive efficiencies and process improvements. Assist in preparing material for presentations to leadership outlining gaps, trends, and findings. Ensure processes address risks while maintaining a client‑centric focus to improve the client experience. Respond to periodic requests from Senior Leadership for refinements or new focus areas related to industries, new processes, or regulatory changes. Communication/Collaboration With Partners and Leadership Maintain regularly scheduled meetings with Commercial Banking and GRM teams to present identified gaps, themes, best practices, and recent audit findings. Collaborate with Banking partners, BBO, GRM, Credit Controls, and Portfolio Risk Management Group to determine root causes and identify effective solutions. Support the team in providing senior leadership testing results quarterly to advise of trends, gaps, and action plans, including contributing to the Commercial Core Risk Committee Deck. Work with the Performance Enablement, Credit Controls, Portfolio Risk Management Group, and other business units to identify training needs for various credit and operational processes. Act as a subject‑matter expert and share insights with training teams. Project/Solutioning Support Work with partners to support process changes and the implementation of new or updated controls. Provide insights and recommendations to support Commercial Banking initiatives. Assess procedures for effectiveness and recommend amendments to improve credit and/or quality. Issues Management & Audit Ensure timely resolution of identified gaps, tracking resolution and escalating delays or challenges. Support stakeholders on ongoing audits and audit issues (e.g., input on potential issues, remediation, sharing results with Banking). Work with partners to ensure self‑identified issues are appropriately escalated and reported in the Bank’s Global Issues Management System (GIMS). Maintain an understanding of external audit, compliance trends, and best practices. Other Understands Bank risk appetite and risk culture in day‑to‑day activities and decisions. Actively pursues effective and efficient operations in compliance with Scotiabank’s values, Code of Conduct, and Global Sales Principles, ensuring adequacy, adherence, and effectiveness of business controls for operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions, and conduct risk. Education / Experience / Other Information Undergraduate degree in Business, Commerce, or Economics. 3–5 years of progressive experience in Commercial Banking, Risk Management, or Audit. Solid understanding of Canadian Commercial Banking workflow processes and differences in information needs between Credit and Banking units. High proficiency with MS Office (Excel and PowerPoint) at intermediate to high level, capable of performing varied analyses quickly and efficiently. Strong knowledge of systems such as Salesforce, nCino, Precision Lender, CreditLens. Highly organized and analytical with strong problem‑solving and project‑management skills. Demonstrated ability to propose and execute solutions for new or evolving requests. Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation, facilitation, influencing, and negotiation. Ability to work under tight deadlines with competing demands and priorities. Ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels and deliver messaging to senior leadership. Fluency in French is a strong asset. Working Conditions Standard office‑based environment in Toronto, Ontario; non‑standard hours are common. Normal sensory attention required; prompt and timely responses to partner and team requests are essential.
