Job Description Priority consideration will be given to candidates who possess the following: Current pastoral reference, confirming the candidate is a practicing Roman Catholic A postgraduate degree in Education, in administration, curriculum, or a related field A minimum of ten years successful administrative experience as an educational leader Term Full‑time (1.0 FTE) continuing position Professional Qualifications Demonstrated commitment and proficiency related to professional learning, instructional leadership, collegiality, communication, and organization. Holds a valid Teaching Certificate of Qualification issued by the BC Ministry of Education. Duties and Responsibilities The Principal is a key educational leader of Vancouver College and its Chief Operating Officer, comparable to Deputy Head of School in other educational institutions. The Principal is appointed by the President with the approval of the Board of Directors and reports to the President. The Principal is responsible for the school’s performance including leadership in curriculum, faculty development and the continued growth and excellence of the academic program. Mission The Principal, together with the President, is responsible for preserving and promoting the Catholic identity of the school, the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice and the philosophy and educational mission as outlined in the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother Education at Vancouver College. Together with the President, promotes the spiritual health, Catholic identity and religious formation of the school community. Academic Program Responsible for the development and delivery of educational outcomes and a culture of excellence. Supervises the curriculum and oversees the assignment of teacher schedules, classes, supervision schedules, evaluation periods and extracurricular activities. Collaborates in setting and reviewing the goals of department heads. Directs long‑range planning of curricular and academic programs. Meets regularly with the Education, Mission, and Identity Committee of the Board to gain approval for program initiatives and changes to the education program. Assists the President in developing the long‑term strategic plan. Acts as chair to the Department Chairs. Personnel Responsible for recruitment, development and performance of all faculty and staff, with the exception of the President, Director of Finance and Facilities Management and Advancement Office staff. Collaborates with the President to prepare a Principal Performance Appraisal Model that will be administered by the President and the Education Committee of the Board. Provides systematic performance appraisals for all members of the faculty and staff and provides opportunity for professional growth. Maintains files on all teachers and staff and any additional information necessary for evaluation. In consultation with the President, approves the hiring and/or dismissal of all members of the faculty, administration and staff with the exception of the President, Director of Finance and Facilities Management and Advancement Office staff. The Principal signs all letters of employment for faculty, administration and staff with the exception of the President, Director of Finance and Facilities Management and Advancement Office staff. In consultation with the President, appoints the senior faculty members including Assistant Principals, Department Chairs, Athletic Director and Campus Ministry. General Administration Together with the administration team, develops school policy published in the Student Handbook and the Employee Policy Handbook and is responsible for its actualization. Is responsible for the general order and safety of the school and the students. Plans and organizes the school year to provide for the effective instruction and coordination of school activities. Oversees the planning of general assemblies, honours assemblies and graduation exercises. Is responsible for the development and execution of an information technology strategy. Acts as the presiding Chief Executive Officer in the absence of the President. Encourages parental involvement, attends to parental concerns, serves as an executive member of the Parents’ Association and ensures coordination of volunteer activities at the school. Facilitates the Open House, assists the Assistant Principals and Registrar with admissions of students new to the school and provides the final decision on all matters related to admissions in a manner consistent with the Admissions. Priority Considerations Sits as a member of the Education, Mission and Identity Committee of the Board as well as other pertinent committees. Attends all Board meetings and reports to the Board on the Education, Mission and Identity Programs at Vancouver College. Remuneration Vancouver College provides a generous pension and benefits package, along with a competitive salary. The latter will be variable, dependent on candidate strength and experience, in the range of $160,000–$170,000.
