What you'll be doing Assess abilities, patient care, priorities, risk, needs, behaviours and resources within the unit Plan patient care assignments, workloads, patient evaluations, communication, implementation of change, processes and new policies as well as orientation, coaching and learning opportunities Act as an expert nursing resource and liaison for the team and other staff in the provision of patient care Participate in patient care conferences, grand rounds, relevant committees, meetings and teams to improve patient care, provide learning opportunities and support risk management, infection control and quality improvement initiatives Collaborate with appropriate health care team members, clients, patients and families to create individualized care plans Communicate patient status concerns, unsafe practice, professional misconduct and unusual situations Identify and recommend actions that will improve functioning of the unit Coordinate the effective and efficient discharge and transfer of patients in collaboration with other members of the Health Care Team Foster a team approach to client care delivery and promote positive behaviour, relationships and working climate Review and follow-up with prescribed interventions i.e. diagnostic, consults, etc. Assist staff with daily evaluation of patient care goals and modification of interventions In keeping with College of Registered Nurses (CNO) standards, promote good interpersonal relationships by modeling professional behavior and practice Mentor nursing staff and provide constructive feedback to promote best practice Participate in relevant education programs, in-services and workshops to increase professional competency and meet personal needs and goals Collaborate with the Clinical Education Team in planning, delivering and reinforcing continuous learning, application of knowledge, critical thinking and application of research What we're looking for Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required; Master's degree in Nursing is preferred Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario 20+ years' experience in acute psychiatric / inpatient unit; or a combination of 15+ years' experience in acute psychiatric / inpatient unit and 5+ years' experience in emergency mental health Advanced knowledge of, and expertise in, psychiatric and mental health nursing Knowledge of Ontario Mental Health Act, PHIPA and the provincial and regional initiatives to enhance patient safety and care as well as current clinical trends and best practices Education and experience with DBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing, crisis intervention and aggressive behaviour management Knowledgeable of and experience with incorporating trauma-informed philosophies into practice Demonstrated consistency with developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with a broad range of individuals and partner organizations Ability to work independently and also collaborate effectively as a member of multi-disciplinary team in an environment that supports quality improvement, client interaction and intervention, staff development and empowerment Knowledge of, and respect for, diversity including economic and social status, race, cultures, beliefs systems and sexuality Evidence of professional development in the areas of new and emerging issues, changing needs of the population, evolving impact of the determinants of health and emerging research Demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate with patients and families to achieve best possible outcomes Excellent organization, communication, leadership, teaching and interpersonal skills Demonstrated success and a keen interest in leading, supervising, delegating, mentoring and teaching Understanding of change behaviour and developmental theories is an asset Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher and various databases As part of our commitment to the health and safety of our patients, staff and community from COVID-19, subject to any accommodation required by applicable human rights legislation, Homewood Health Centre requires that all staff have received all required doses of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada.
