The Opportunity WSP's ERI (Energy, Resources and Industry) Sector has an opportunity for a Structural Drafter/Designer to support the growth of our Industrial and Resources group. The successful candidate will be someone who will hit the ground running, joining a close-knit team working on heavy industrial manufacturing projects in the Greater Toronto/Hamilton area and Golden Horseshoe. Reporting to the Senior Engineer/Team Lead, you’ll work with a dynamic and busy team working on various small and medium-sized new construction and rehabilitation projects within the mining and heavy industrial sectors. The Resources Engineering group also provides service to institutional and government clients. You will apply your structural drafting expertise to support project work from conceptual design through completion. This position is located out of our Thunder Bay office. What you can expect to do here You’ll be applying your modelling and design knowledge on project work from conceptual design through to completion, producing models and drawings for planning and construction. You’ll look after technical quality, visualization, cost effectiveness, and you’ll foster and develop client relationships and enhance your client management skills. You’ll have opportunities to attend sites and see in real‑time work taking place, and review and verify construction progress as it happens. You’ll work in CAD and REVIT regularly to develop drawings including those for foundations, structures in steel, masonry and concrete. You’ll prepare structural steel 3D models and 2D drawings for industrial buildings, pipe racks, tank foundations and containments, rail track platforms, equipment platforms, etc. Working closely as part of the design team, your input will be valued and relied upon. As part of a large multi‑discipline team, you’ll work across other business lines and with colleagues in other departments for collaboration and smooth project execution. As a client‑facing designer, you’ll attend various client sites and conduct field reviews, gather information, and take measurements. You’ll do material quantity take‑off for steel structures, foundations, excavation and earthworks. You’ll review shop drawings for reinforcing steel and structural steel. You’ll always ensure health and safety policies are followed at all sites and take WSP’s Life Saving rules to heart. What You’ll Bring to WSP College degree/diploma in civil engineering technology, structural engineering or equivalent. 5+ years of relevant experience in structural drafting and design, specifically in heavy industrial and/or mining projects desired. Proficiency in AutoCAD and REVIT programs. Demonstrated experience with 2D and 3D modeling. Strong understanding of steel and concrete foundations. Experience within a large project and multi‑disciplinary EPCM environment. An understanding of and experience with Ontario and National Building Codes and relevant standards.
