Intermediate Mechanical Engineer WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to join our Buildings Mechanical & Electrical team at the Thornhill office. A Day In The Life This role is responsible for leading the engineering design of HVAC and plumbing systems for both new construction and retrofit projects. Perform site surveys and visits. Prepare mechanical design briefs, perform load and ventilation calculations, ductwork and pipe sizing, and select mechanical equipment (chiller, boiler, cooling tower, pumps, expansion tanks, air handling units, fans, silencers, heat pumps, VRF split AC, etc.). Design HVAC systems with a focus on ventilation for heating and cooling plants. Prepare mechanical drawings and specifications per WSP standards, building codes, and project deliverables. Complete energy calculations. Attend client meetings and respond to RFPs. Assist in fee proposal letters. Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, and other disciplines for implementation. Review mechanical shop drawings, respond to RFI, and provide site instructions and change notices. Lead the preparation of responses to requests for quotations. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Strong understanding of mechanical system design for data center buildings or science facilities such as labs or pharmaceutical facilities. Experience with decarbonization projects. Valid PEO license. 3‑5 years’ experience in mechanical consulting. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, and other Autodesk tools. Knowledge of central heating and cooling plant components. Experience designing boiler and chiller plants. General arrangement, equipment, and piping layout of heating and cooling plants. Sizing and selection of boilers, heat exchangers, chillers, cooling towers, heat pumps, and pumps. Pumping arrangements (primary/secondary variations). Control schematics and narrative. Building automation system integration with district heating/cooling distribution. Understanding of energy modelling, energy costs, and life‑cycle costing (asset). Can‑do attitude with strong initiative, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Profound knowledge of Ontario Building Codes, CSA standards, and ASHRAE standards related to mechanical systems. Strong desire and ability to collaborate and solve problems in an integrated team environment. Desire to interact with clients. Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
