The Genetic Counsellor is responsible for patient genetic assessment, counselling and support of prenatal patients, follow up as appropriate, documentation, education development, and diagnostic work ups where appropriate. Scarborough Health Network is committed to the deployment of Lean thinking as the fundamental philosophy underpinning our transformation efforts.RequirementsMasters degree in genetic counselling or equivalent combination of education and trainingBoard certified or Board eligible with Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC)One year of recent genetic counselling experience (prenatal and general) preferredAbility to work effectively without close supervision and ability to work as part of a Regional Genetics ServiceExcellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skillsExcellent organization and leadership skillsProvides prenatal and general genetics counselling services (risk assessment, testing options, booking appropriate procedures, communication of results, provision of education materials)Communicates and consults with other health care professionals and functions as a member of the health care team, including the regional genetics centre at North York General HospitalWorks as part of a team with physician-geneticist by consulting regarding pending referrals, providing patient management throughout the consultation process and arranging follow-up testing as requiredInitiates referrals to hospital and community based programs for required servicesInterprets and implements hospital and departmental policies, programs and procedures as requiredMaintains quality assurance in genetic counselling servicesParticipates in continuing medical educationServes on committees as requestedExposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patientsDemonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this areaDemonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and publicDemonstrates good pattern of attendanceAccommodation And Diversity StatementScarborough Health Network (SHN) embraces and celebrates our community’s unique multicultural heritage and diversity.
