Consultant, Wildlife Biologist

ERM is seeking an outstanding Consultant, Wildlife Biologist to join our Calgary, Vancouver, Smithers, or Saskatoon office. This role will support our Capital Project Delivery Team, with a primary focus on mining and energy projects. As a member of the team, you will act as a biologist in Canada, with capacity to complete work in various jurisdictions across the country, primarily in western and northern Canada. This position will focus on wildlife and wildlife habitat, including species at risk and species of concern such as harvested wildlife. The Intermediate Wildlife Biologist will lead wildlife field surveys, analyze field data, complete wildlife ecological assessments, and write mitigation plans for ERM projects in the mining and energy sectors. More broadly, the applicant must show an interest in applying knowledge and skills to help our clients solve complex challenges in these sectors. The successful candidate will be a member of a large multidisciplinary team in Canada and will become a member of an extensive team of global environmental and social experts. We are seeking a motivated, experienced person who enjoys problem solving and working within a multi‑stakeholder environment. RESPONSIBILITIES Develop and lead wildlife field programs (including surveys for birds, amphibians, and large mammals) primarily in Western Canada and Northern Canada. Support preparation of wildlife assessments for environmental assessments or Environmental Impact Statements and associated management plans in compliance with applicable federal, provincial/territorial requirements. Perform project delivery activities including but not limited to field surveys, literature reviews, report writing, and developing recommendations for clients. Prepare proposals, including development of scopes and cost estimates, and participate in business development with existing clients. Work on multiple projects within scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables and timely delivery of reports. Communicate with subcontractors, regulatory agencies, landowners, Indigenous communities, and clients during field activities, as required. Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees worldwide. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS B.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences, or related field. Or equivalent experience. 2+ years of environmental consulting experience; prior experience in government, and/or mining, renewable energy, or oil and gas sectors are considered assets. Experience with federal, provincial and territorial regulations and guidelines pertaining to survey methodologies and environmental assessments. Ability to lead wildlife field surveys. Experience in technical writing. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to mentor junior wildlife team members. Deep commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols. Ability to follow directions and take initiative when required. Excellent communication, organizational, and time‑management skills. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a demanding work environment. Registration or ability to register with the BC College of Applied Biology as a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio.) or Registered Biology Technologists (R.B.Tech) or Biologist in Training (B.I.T.) and/or with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists as a Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) or Biologist in Training (B.I.T). Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area. This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship. PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences, or related field. 3+ years preferred of environmental consulting experience; prior experience in government, and/or mining, renewable energy, or oil and gas sectors are considered assets. Statistical analysis or spatial habitat mapping skills. Experience working on caribou projects. Experience working on wind energy projects. Experience with camera trap data processing. For the Consultant, Wildlife Biologist position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $69,867 – $83,047 (CAD). An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue‑based metrics, and business or organizational needs. We also may have instances where employee’s fall outside of the range based on the factors noted above. This job may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are NOT bonus eligible).
