Lakeridge Health is home to several regional specialty centres including the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre, Pinewood Centre for addictions and mental health, and The Shoulder Centre. The Lakeridge Health Emergency Departments are among the busiest in the Province, seeing approximately 100,000 visits annually. This position is supported through the Ontario Physician Assistant Career Start Program, which supports new graduates with full-time employment opportunities.Role alignment: integrated member of the health care team in the Emergency Department, focused on patient experience, learning, quality improvement, patient safety, and collaborative team-based care. The program supports mentorship, supervision, and ongoing career growth within Ontario’s health-care system.ResponsibilitiesObtain health and social historiesConduct physical assessments and interpret findingsActivate medical directives and complete preliminary interpretations of necessary diagnostic tests including ECGs, laboratory tests, and diagnostic imagingPerform procedures such as ECG, casting, suturing, application of orthopedic devices, slit lamp examination, measuring intraocular pressure, visual acuityFormulate treatment plans and support connections to consultants, allied health, outpatient clinics and other services as neededDocument patient encountersSupport physicians with health care technology and applications such as Connecting Ontario and hospital applications including the Clinical Information System, Order Set repository, and bedside ultrasoundDemonstrate a strong desire for lifelong learning, quality improvement, patient safety and collaborative team-based careQualifications2025 Graduate of McMaster University and the Consortium of PA Education - the University of TorontoRegistration in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of OntarioCurrent membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) and/or NCCPACertified or eligible for certification through the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or United States (NCCPA) requiredGraduate of MOHLTC-approved program including the Canadian Forces Physician Assistant Training Program, graduate of a Canadian or American PA training program, or trained international medical graduateFlexibility with superior organization skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environmentAbility to exercise sound judgment and discretion with confidential patient informationStrong work ethic, professionalism and reliability with commitment to outstanding customer serviceExcellent written and spoken communication and interpersonal skillsExposure to Lean principles and commitment to using relevant tools to improve patient careUnderstanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health safety programs and practicesCommitment to the core values of Inclusion, Compassion, Innovation, Teamwork & JoyConditions Of EmploymentThe terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with Lakeridge Health’s policies and procedures.Lakeridge Health thanks all applicants; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.Successful external applicants must provide a satisfactory Criminal Investigation Reference for the vulnerable sector, dated within the past six (6) months.
