The roles we offer hold significance because the work we do makes a difference. Come and join us Conductors are integral members of train crews of two or three people, responsible for tasks related to the movement of trains, rail cars, and locomotives within rail yards and on routes. Their duties involve coordinating train assembly, performing ground work outside the locomotive cab, such as operating track switches, picking up rail cars, making emergency repairs, among other responsibilities. Responsibilities The following are key job functions that an employee must fulfill, with or without accommodations, to meet the objectives of the Conductor role: Ensuring compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and safety regulations Giving and receiving various forms of instructions regarding rail car movement and placement Assembling/disassembling trains in the rail yard, and picking up/setting off rail cars along the route Observing, interpreting, and relaying signals to ensure safe movement of trains and locomotives Operating track switches to change locomotive and rail car routes Inspecting the condition of trains and equipment Making effective decisions in unfamiliar or emergency situations Communicating efficiently with the Rail Traffic Control center, other train crews, and departments using handheld radio devices on a regular basis Training Successful candidates will engage in a comprehensive paid training program comprising 11 weeks of training (7 weeks classroom training at the CN Campus in Winnipeg, MB, and 4 weeks of field training). CN now provides an enhanced and highly competitive training remuneration. The company covers expenses for transportation, accommodation, and meals in Winnipeg. After the initial 11-week training period, candidates will complete a minimum of 45 trips as an additional crew member to enhance their skills and knowledge. Successful completion of the entire training program is mandatory to work as a Conductor, encompassing written exams and field training, including physical requirements. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Working a flexible schedule with regular and consistent attendance, aligning with the 24/7 railroading environment (including night, weekend, holiday work hours, potential overtime, and extended periods away from home) Engaging in tasks like pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying items weighing up to 90 pounds Working outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions Operating various devices on rail cars and locomotives, including uncoupling levers and handbrakes Climbing on and off moving rail cars' ladders Holding and gripping objects while on a moving train Walking extensively for prolonged periods Performing frequent bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling Meeting the medical fitness requirements for the role as outlined by the Railway Association of Canada, which includes the ability to recognize signal colors Other Requirements Passing safety and rules exams Holding a high school diploma or equivalent qualification Acquiring and retaining the Conductors Rule Card Possessing and maintaining a passport for entry/re-entry to Canada and the United States (in specific locations) Demonstrating proficiency in both oral and written communication Assets Completion of college or vocational/technical school and/or experience as a Freight Conductor Relevant work experience in similar environments or within regulatory/safety settings Holding and maintaining a valid driver's license Relocation Incentive

The following conditions apply to newly hired employees after completing their training period at their designated location for three years: Provision of accommodation for up to three months at a CN Bunkhouse or selected CN Hotel After the probationary period, a relocation allowance will be provided to assist with moving expenses Upon completing twelve months of employment as a qualified Conductor, an additional relocation allowance is provided Additionally, employees relocating under this incentive will receive lump sum allowances as follows: Upon completing 365 days at the new location, 7% of their earnings received as a lump sum After 730 days at the new location, 10% of earnings received as a lump sum After 1095 days at the new location, 20% of earnings received as a lump sum *Approval to qualify subject to the company's discretion. This incentive does not apply to current CN Rail Transportation Employees.
