Portage la Prairie offers a lifestyle that is safe, peaceful, and fulfilling for you and your family.Position OverviewThe Families First Home Visitor works with families using a strength-based and solution-focused approach to promote positive parent-child relationships, support healthy childhood growth and development, enhance parenting skills, promote safety and well-being, and connect families with their community. The Home Visitor reports to the regional Public Health/Community Team manager and works in conjunction with the Public Health Nurse who provides reflective supervision and coordination for guidance in regional day-to-day operations.Families First is a community-based program designed to promote healthy growth and development of children by supporting families in their homes, during pregnancy and the first five years of a child’s life, for up to three years. The Home Visitor is part of an inter-disciplinary team and initiates and maintains regular connections through family-centered home visiting. S/he uses an evidence-informed curriculum and shares activities that support positive parent-child interactions. In consultation with Public Health Nurses, the Home Visitor supports families to explore goals related to culture and values. The Home Visitor implements home visiting practices according to established guidelines of the provincial Families First Program. This position operates in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, values, and policies of the Regional Health Authority and Southern Health-Santé Sud.The incumbent exercises initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities and methods. The position aligns with organizational policies and values.ResponsibilitiesInitiate and maintain regular family-centered home visiting with families (0-5 years or prenatal to birth).Use an evidence-informed curriculum to support positive parent-child interactions.Collaborate with Public Health Nurses and other team members to provide guidance and reflective supervision.Assist families in exploring goals related to culture, values, and community connections.Work within established guidelines of the provincial Families First Program.ExperienceMinimum of 1 year experience working with families with young children ages 0-5, or prenatal families, in areas related to parenting, within the last five years.Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)High School Diploma or equivalent; or GED Manitoba Standards required.Certification as a Community Support Worker, Social Services Worker, Family Support Worker, Early Childhood Educator, or other relevant post-secondary education in a related field is an asset.Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.Successful candidate must complete Families First provincial orientation and training as scheduled.Certification/Licensure/RegistrationNot ApplicableQualifications and SkillsStrong problem solving and decision-making skills.Ability to adapt to change and work in a dynamic environment.Shows initiative and can take direction; able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team using effective communication.Ability to use curriculum-based resources and adult learning principles.Ability to plan, organize and implement strength-based, trauma-informed, and culturally safe practices.Knowledge of early childhood growth and development prenatally up to five years of age.Understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions, values, and language is an asset.Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Internet applications.Fluency in English (verbal, reading, written). Bilingualism may be essential for designated positions.Respect for confidentiality in all formats.Good work and attendance record.Valid Class 5 driver’s license, all-purpose insured vehicle, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.Physical RequirementsAbility to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.Ability to provide service in diverse community settings under varying weather and environmental conditions.Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 20 lbs (9 kg).Ability to climb stairs, crouch, kneel/sit on the floor during home visits and activities with families.Travel throughout the region/province for training or service delivery; remote Northern positions may require overnight accommodations.Evening and weekend work may be required to meet client needs.This term position may end earlier as outlined in the collective agreement.
