Job Description

The Director, Cost Analytics is responsible for supporting the organization's operational strategy to align with Fund-wide objectives, ensuring that resources are optimally allocated to support business priorities. Reporting to the Managing Director within the Financial Analytics & Planning Team, your contributions will be critical to shaping the team's direction and executing cross-functional initiatives.

Your expertise will provide the necessary analytical support to propel informed business decisions and continuous improvement.

Your leadership will be vital in:

  • Business Planning and Forecasting: Manage the creation and execution of detailed financial plans and forecasts for departments and projects. Assess current practices, recommend process and system improvements, and advance our cost methodology.
  • Develop Cost Variance Models and Refine Cost Categories: Lead the development and implementation of cost variance models for total Fund and departments, enhancing cost category definitions to ensure efficient and accountable management of costs.
  • Management Reporting Oversight: Oversee month-end and quarter-end activities that underpin our cost reporting systems and data warehouse, ensuring data accuracy and timely delivery.

Key responsibilities Include:

  • Lead a team and provide initiative-taking guidance in developing cost variance models and attribution reports using relevant cost drivers at various levels of granularity.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop expense oversights and controls and establish a shared understanding of cost definitions. Monitor cost performance by measuring relevant cost drivers against actuals, forecasts, and budgets. This will enhance visibility into resource consumption and identify opportunities to optimize resource allocation.
  • Support an efficient business planning process with Finance Business Partners and internal stakeholders. Ensure the process accommodates business priorities, Fund guidance, and other strategic priorities. Ground the process by cost objectives that incent cost discipline behavior.
  • Review and organize the monthly and quarterly close process for management cost reporting for CPP Investments to support both internal reporting to the Senior Management Team, Audit Committee, and Board of Directors as well as the Annual Report.
  • Optimize budgeting and planning system to increase operational efficiencies and support various Finance initiatives to efficiently book, track, and report costs.
  • Collaborate with internal partners to leverage various data sources effectively and apply advanced analytics methods to effectively challenge cost variances and gain insights into cost categories.
  • Promote continuous improvements in existing processes through automation and new technologies, while ensuring integrity and accuracy of the outputs.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in preparing budget, forecasts, and ex-post cost variance analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of asset management companies or financial institutions with a commercial approach to decision-making.
  • Exemplify CPP Investments Guiding Principles of integrity, partnership, and high performance.
  • Solid problem-solving skills with experience in automation tools and planning software (e.g., Tableau, Think-cell, Oracle Enterprise Performance Management) to improve the effectiveness of processes.
  • Demonstrate resilience in the face of change and can effectively manage competing demands. Effective delegation and supervision of specific output.
  • Proven track record in managing and mentoring staff.
  • Apply critical thinking to resolve operational or cross-departmental issues and deliver insight and recommendations guided by defined cost objectives. Leads self and others to solve broadly defined problems by considering impact beyond own team.
