Postdoctoral Fellowship – ALMA Archival Research on Fragmentation in Star-Forming Cores Location: Victoria, CanadaOrganization: Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics, National Research Council Canada Project Overview The fellowship will focus on using archival ALMA data to study fragmentation within dense star-forming cores. The applicant will process continuum and line data with the CANFAR Science Platform, identify core fragments, analyse their properties, and compare findings with numerical simulations. The project will also contribute to developing large‑scale data capabilities within CANFAR, preparing for Canada’s SKA Regional Centre. Responsibilities Process ALMA continuum and line data of dense cores in nearby molecular clouds using the CANFAR Science Platform. Identify and catalogue core fragments, determining their physical properties. Compare observational results with predictions from numerical simulations of star‑formation. Develop and maintain ‘big data’ pipelines for future use within the NRC research community. Collaborate with NRC Herzberg researchers, present results at internal seminars, and contribute to peer‑reviewed publications. Qualifications PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field (or expected within 6 months). Strong track record of high‑calibre refereed publications in astronomy. Experience with reduction, analysis, and interpretation of astronomical data from ground‑ or space‑based observatories or archival data. Knowledge of star‑formation and core fragmentation (preferred). Experience with ALMA or other radio/submillimetre interferometry data is desirable. Experience with large cloud computing resources (helpful). Fluency in English. Work Arrangements Hybrid arrangement: combinations of onsite (Victoria, Canada) and telework. Teleworkers will travel to the NRC facility at least three times per week at their own expense. Compensation & Benefits Salary range (tied to early‑career level): average $83,985 – $116,641.
