Join us today and make a difference Job Description Under the general supervision of the Manager of the Technical Platforms of the Center for Innovative Medicine (CIM), the incumbent conducts 2–3 polysomnographic recordings on research subjects per night in accordance with the requirements of research protocols. This may include standardized and specialized diagnostic recordings and administration of therapy including positive pressure therapy as specified by research protocols. The position also includes calibrating, troubleshooting and maintaining equipment, performing recording and subsequent data analysis and processing. This position may include breathing tests, stress tests, and assistance during bronchoscopy procedures or any other related tasks assigned by the supervisor. Position Summary Conduct overnight polysomnographic recordings, perform data acquisition, analysis, and generate reports in accordance with research protocols. Provide patient care and safety, maintain equipment, and support the research team. General Duties Review existing patient documentation Examine orders and protocols for study Interview patient to assess current health status, medications, recent caffeine or alcohol ingestion, current sleep pattern, and need for treatment intervention during testing (e.g., insulin) Communicate with Principal investigator or designated personnel to verify unclear orders and communicate information about the patient’s status Explain test procedure to patient Measure patient’s weight and height Enter patient’s demographics in recording computer and database Set‑up and calibrate monitoring equipment Apply appropriate EEG electrodes using International 10–20 system Apply EKG, EMG, and EOG monitoring electrodes Place and securely attach recording transducers and sensors to measure airflow, respiratory effort, oximetry, and body position Install esophageal balloon and CO₂ monitor when indicated Install other specialized recording equipment as specified by research protocol Perform physiological calibrations, verify patient maneuvers, and record Carry out data acquisition on the computer with lab analysis software Enter pertinent observations during the study (e.g., changes in body position, level of therapeutic intervention) Recognize and record clinical and physiological events Recognize and correct artifacts Identify and troubleshoot recording and instrumentation malfunctions Provide maximum patient comfort to obtain required sleep data Monitor and change patient’s body position as needed Remove or replace electrodes, transducers, sensors and assist patient with hygiene as necessary Clean all the materials used such as the electrodes and make the bed Generate a preliminary report Enter subject information Enter a preliminary report and notable observations in the log book Administer O₂, CPAP and BIPAP or other therapy as specified by research protocol Data Analysis Sleep Stage Analysis: analyze sleep by scoring stages – wake stage, 1, 2, 3, 4 and REM, and recognizing EEG phenomena Arousal analysis: differentiate micro arousal, movement arousal and movement time; recognize arousals as spontaneous or evoked by leg movements Respiratory analysis: recognize sleep‑disordered breathing and categorize events such as OA (obstructive apnea), CA (central apnea), OH (obstructive hypopnea), CH (central hypopnea), and UAWRs (upper airway resistance syndrome) Recognize PLM, snoring, and cardiac events and perform analysis on them Identify other physiologic events as defined in research protocol Generate a summary report Backup / archive raw and summary data Transfer summary data to database Patient And Equipment Safety Recognize and respond appropriately to subject medical problems and physiological events, particularly cardiac dysrhythmias, respiratory events and seizures Safely lift and move patient without harm to patient or self Ensure safety and welfare of all subjects, including subjects with special needs Check availability and function of equipment Comply with Universal Infection Control Procedures Properly disinfect and sterilize equipment, electrodes, and transducers Appropriately handle hazardous materials such as mercury, acetone or collodion Education / Experience Education: Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in Health Sciences or a related field such as respiratory therapy. Work Shift: Variable Schedule (night time recordings on week nights or weekend; additional day time hours as needed). Work Site: GLEN Site, 1001 boul.
