Detailed Overview Reporting to the Supervisor, MRI and Site Coordinator, Medical Imaging, the MRI Technologist practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and utilizes a client‑ and family‑centered care model. The technologist performs MRI examinations in accordance with departmental policy and procedures, including receipt and completion of requisitions, entry of data into the radiology information system, preparation of examination trays, patient positioning, operation of computerized imaging equipment, monitoring of the patient during procedures and monitoring of equipment performance. Responsibilities Performs examinations in MRI in accordance with established procedures, completing requisitions and related paperwork, correlating clinical history with the examination to be performed, positioning patients and explaining procedures, performing venipuncture for contrast media injections as directed, operating imaging equipment, labeling permanent records and checking technical results. Monitors patients during procedures, observing and responding to possible contrast media reactions or other emergent situations; may be required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency. Conducts image studies using MRI equipment and departmental information systems, ensuring patient identification, collating images with requisitions and requesting previous studies. Reports malfunctioning equipment to the Supervisor. Facilitates the workflow of the designated work area by reviewing requisitions, regulating inpatient examination time and arranging departmental and/or facility porters. Performs quality control duties such as scheduling and performing equipment tests, recording results and identifying malfunctioning equipment for repair; notifies Supervisor of all quality control issues. Participates in the departmental Continuous Quality Improvement/LEAN programs by using established monitoring and auditing methodologies to perform quality assurance checks such as patient and physician satisfaction or booking protocols. Maintains the designated work area by checking and cleaning equipment, setting up examination trays, receiving and stocking supplies, identifying depleted items and notifying Supervisor of purchases. Demonstrates procedures and equipment usage to staff, including residents, technologists and students, and participates in orientation of new employees. Maintains patient and hospital records by entering data into the radiology and hospital information systems as required. Responds to inquiries from other clinical areas regarding patient examinations and schedules and refers concerns to the appropriate supervisor. Determines workload measurements and compiles workload statistical reports; develops and maintains statistical data related to department activity, attendance, leaves of absence, performance appraisals and makes recommendations to improve services. Ensures the department meets Health and Safety rules, regulations and practices such as fire, disaster, WHMIS, Smart Moves and infection control by updating staff on changes, following up on safety recommendations and ensuring staff are adequately trained and authorized. Participates in approved research and special projects in collaboration with the Supervisor and other health care professionals. Maintains equipment by monitoring operation and arranging maintenance and repairs as required. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements; immediately reports unsafe situations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Certification with CAMRT (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Completion of Intravenous Therapy training course when required by site practice and one (1) year recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification – Basic Life Support (BCLS) level. Skills and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of standards of practice and guidelines for Medical Imaging practitioners established by the CAMRT and/or other relevant national professional associations. Knowledge of evidence‑based practice related to the modality. Knowledge of organization policies, procedures, and standards of care, including safe work procedures with imaging equipment. Knowledge of current MRI theory and practices within a client/family‑centered model of care. Safe work procedures with medical imaging equipment. Knowledge of research process and methodology. Knowledge of PACS / radiology information systems, i.e., digital imaging, image archiving and retrieval. Ability to develop procedure protocols and manuals. Ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and deal effectively with clients, families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff and external agencies. Ability to deal with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues. Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others. Ability to plan and establish workload priorities in collaboration with others. Skill in MRI techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies. Ability in CPR techniques. Computer skills with current computer applications. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
