We collaborate with architects, engineers, and builders to create innovative, sustainable, and buildable timber solutions that redefine modern construction.Role Summary:As a Mass Timber Structural Engineer at Element5, you will provide structural design and detailing for mass timber projects, ensuring high-quality, innovative, and efficient solutions. You will lead or contribute to project design efforts while working closely with our CLT and Glulam production teams to align designs with manufacturing and assembly requirements. Your work will help streamline structural design processes and optimize the efficiency of mass timber structures, while also contributing to the development of internal tools, resources, and systems that support advanced and effective design practices.Responsibilities & Duties:Perform structural design and analysis for mass timber structures, ensuring compliance with codes, standards, and project requirements.Develop prototypes, building profiles, and connection details to support efficient manufacturing and assembly.Mentor and oversee junior designers, reviewing calculations, drawings, and models to maintain quality and consistency.Create and refine internal design tools and resources to improve efficiency and standardization.Balance customization with standardization by applying product-focused design approaches aligned with manufacturing capabilities.Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production and project management, to ensure designs integrate with fabrication and assembly processes.Respond to technical inquiries from clients and internal stakeholders, providing clear and precise engineering guidance.Incorporate sustainable design practices, considering material efficiency and environmental performance in structural solutions.Perform other related duties as assigned by management to support departmental and organizational goals.Professional Qualifications & Core Competencies:Deep understanding of building codes, standards, and regulations, with a focus on timber construction.Strong knowledge of CLT and Glulam design, with experience applying Canadian Codes and Standards.Ability to mentor junior designers and support knowledge sharing across the team.Works well with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between design, production, and client needs.Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and adjusting to changing priorities.Takes initiative and applies a solutions-focused mindset to technical and process challenges.Education & Experience:Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering; master’s or PhD considered an asset.Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation is an asset.2-5 years of experience in structural design.Proficiency in gravity and lateral structural design according to Canadian Codes and Standards.Experience in lateral system design, including wind and seismic static and dynamic analysis for multi-story structures.Background or strong interest in mass timber design and construction.Working Conditions & Environment:Primarily office-based with standard business hours.Occasional travel required to project sites and manufacturing facilities.May involve exposure to typical manufacturing environments, including noise, dust, and variable temperatures.Join Element5 and contribute to building a sustainable future.
