System Design Specialist

OverviewJoin to apply for the System Design Specialist - Intermediate role at Hitachi Rail.Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid) – We are looking for a System Design Specialist – Intermediate to join our team in Toronto. The incumbent will perform system design, signaling design, analysis, modelling, and simulation to specify communication-based train control systems. They will develop and define system design features to meet customer requirements, analyze and evaluate customer requirements, verify compliance with product system technical requirements, and develop system and subsystem requirements to fulfill specific customer needs. The role involves communicating and gaining acceptance of the design with the customer and internal stakeholders. The work is performed with limited supervision within cost and schedule limits as defined in approved work packages, typically under the direction of the Work Package Manager. The System Design Specialist, Intermediate typically works with a team of engineers to define the project\'s requirements/design under the technical supervision of the System Design Lead.Key AccountabilitiesWork with a complex set of data and synthesize findings for the team.Collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds (engineers, legal, planning, finance).Demonstrate strong communication skills and curiosity in asking questions.Create a set of valuable KPIs for the Project Director after understanding company processes.Benchmark best practices (internal and external).Support Associate Project Manager on documentation management.Support PMO Manager on establishing proper governance and reporting.TechnicalPrepare and support customer requirements compliance assessments and gap analyses.Translate customer requirements into conceptual designs and documentation through analyses, simulations, and trade-off studies evaluating alternative configurations and features.Develop new concepts or modify existing concepts to meet customer requirements.Prepare system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing and decomposing modelling and refining customer requirements.Present technical design to engineering/management groups clearly and concisely.Interface with Software, Hardware and IVVQ groups to resolve test issues in a timely manner.SafetyPromote a safety culture where product safety is paramount.Ensure safety is integrated into the design by early identification and resolution of safety-related defects.ManagementImplement process improvements within the project.Key RequirementsBachelor’s degree in engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a closely related field.2-5 years’ experience in development of software-based system applications.Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods, and tools.Knowledge of systems development life cycle.Moderate-level expertise in URS (Urban Rail Signaling) Systems with a minimum of 3 years on or similar system complexity; intermediate level of expertise in CBTC (Communication Based Train Control).Preferred QualificationsExperience using DOORS, Polarion, Melody Advance, or other system design and requirement management tools.Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices.Rail Signaling knowledge.System engineering expertise.Strong planning, presentation, and organizational skills.Excellent technical writing and communication skills.We thank you for your interest in Hitachi Rail.
