Job Description GENERAL STATEMENT With the direct supervision of the Chair and in collaboration with faculty and other lab technologists, the Lab Technologist II prepares materials, supplies and equipment for laboratory teaching activities, provides technical support to instructors during the preparation and delivery of the laboratory portion of courses, and works cooperatively with faculty and other lab technologists to optimize the operation and promotion of the laboratory training in the department. TYPICAL DUTIES Prepares solutions and reagents with appropriate accuracy and suitable delivery; Develops lab prep sheets, prepares sample data analysis sheets for instructors and determines materials needed for laboratory exercises; Organizes reagents, specimens, and equipment; When requested, assists faculty in the planning of laboratory exercises so as to optimize the use of departmental resources; Maintains specimens geology) needed for various laboratory exercises; Routinely maintains and cleans lab equipment, laboratories, and prep area; Repairs and services departmental equipment; Follows WHMIS guidelines, handles, and stores chemical and biohazard materials safely, prepares hazardous waste disposal record sheets and arranges with college OH&S department for chemical disposal; Develops and maintains databases for inventory of: chemicals, MSDS, equipment, supplies, and other lab data; When requested, may assist faculty during laboratory classes, field trips and other college-based activities in a non-instructional role; Develops, submits, and reviews annual tender lists for all non-capital supplies for department; makes appropriate recommendations and prepares final purchase requests for approval by the Chair; Prepares and submits purchase requests on an as needed basis; Performs other related duties of similar scope and complexity. QUALIFICATIONS Two-year diploma in post-secondary education in chemistry with two years of relevant laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional basic knowledge in geoscience, biochemistry, and / or biotechnology and in computer software applications. The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
