Under the direction of the Associate Dean, and in collaboration with the Indigenous Education Council, and other College departments, such as the Office of Indigenous Education and Student Services, the successful applicant will be expected to develop, deliver, and revise courses and programs that reflect Indigenous knowledge, context, and worldviews. These Indigenous Studies programs include, but are not limited to: The 2+2 Pathway program in the General Arts and Sciences Diploma to McMaster University’s Honours BA in Indigenous Studies; and to Wilfrid Laurier University’s Honours BA in Indigenous Studies Indigenous Ways of Knowing Certificate The Indigenous courses include, but are not limited to: First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Perspectives Indigenous Wholistic Practices Impacts of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Indigenous Peoples Evolving Media and Artistic Images Indigenous Connections to the Land First Nations Languages - Resilience and Reclamations Indigenous Family Structure and Child Welfare Global Citizenship - First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Perspectives What you’ll be doing: The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Working closely with stakeholders across the institution to foster sustainable practices for including Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Doing into education programming, including developing land-based, intergenerational, and/or multimodal learning activities. Consulting with Mohawk College’s Indigenous Education Council, Elders, and Indigenous learners to build a safe learning environment that respects Indigenous culture and identities. Designing, updating, and delivering a variety of courses that uphold academic quality and adhere to college policies and procedures. Defining, evaluating, and validating learning outcomes for courses and programs. Creating a positive, collaborative, and engaging learning environment, both in the classroom and online, that upholds the principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Providing innovative educational delivery and experiences through the use of online educational technology and learning management systems (i.e., MyCanvas), for in-class and online delivery. Using a variety of teaching and learning strategies such as Experiential Learning (EL), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), adaptive technology, and alternative delivery methodologies. Designing appropriate assessment strategies and tools for facilitating and evaluating learner progress and achievement. Participating in department, school, and college-wide activities/tasks as required. Working creatively, collaboratively, and collegially with administrators, colleagues, staff, and learners. Managing the educational environment to facilitate an optimal learning experience and learner success. Other duties as assigned. What you’ll bring to the role: The successful candidate will have: Lived experience in and knowledge of First Nations, Metis, or Inuit communities. A Master’s level graduate degree, a PhD, or equivalent, in a related discipline, e.g., Education or Indigenous Studies, is an asset. An ethical engagement within Indigenous communities with reference letters and supporting documentation communicating the applicant’s relationship(s). Engagement will include, but is not limited to, understanding the importance of consensus‑building relationships. Evidence of three to five years of effective adult or post‑secondary level teaching experience. Experience applying Indigenous pedagogy and epistemologies, and supporting the integration of Indigenous pedagogy and practices into the curriculum. Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse learners and provide a positive learning environment to learners working at different skill levels, including international learners, Indigenous learners, first‑generation learners, and learners requiring accommodation. Experience and knowledge of the intersections of Indigenous education, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as they relate broadly to curriculum/program development and teaching and learning. Evidence of demonstrated application of adult learning principles, methodologies, curriculum design, and development. Knowledge and experience with Learning Management Systems, e.g., Canvas, to enhance learning. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an academic team, through the application of strong interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter‑culturally with diverse groups of learners, employees, and the community.
