Automation and Robotics Specialist at Active Dynamics Group Active Dynamics is a progressive OEM supplier that designs, tests, and manufactures unique solutions for multiple systems and industries. As a world‑leading design and manufacturing company, we are seeking an experienced Automation and Robotics Specialist to join our Toronto team. The primary responsibility of this role is to lead projects in the planning, design, development, and implementation of automation solutions for manufacturing processes, integrate and program electrical components and robots, and ensure that systems meet and exceed our quality and production objectives safely and efficiently. Duties and Responsibilities Create detailed automation design proposals including controls, electrical, pneumatic, and hardware specifications, testing, commissioning, and validation. Develop and verify safety systems and conduct safety risk assessments. Interpret, read, and write electrical and electronic schematics, basic hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams. Prepare and release drawings for new projects, record changes diligently, and release updated drawings. Install, program, and integrate PLCs, HMIs, robots, tooling, drives, actuators, sensors, and vision systems; start‑up, debug, and ensure compliance with internal and customer standards. Program Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Kuka welding and material handling robots. Program and maintain robots online/offline using CIM Station, Fanuc Weld Pro, MotoSim, and Robot Studio. Provide automation ideas, assist with ROI studies, and justify new initiatives. Integrate specialized hardware and software into manufacturing systems, focusing on efficiency, throughput, and cycle‑time improvements. Prepare training documentation, work instructions, and procedures for handover to production and maintenance. Assist the manufacturing engineer in monitoring equipment and tooling suppliers during quotation, design, build, and installation stages for new programs and improvements or retrofits. Contribute in cross‑functional APQP meetings, providing input on DFM/GDT analysis, PFMEA, control plans, process capability studies, DOE’s, poka‑yoke, and root‑cause analysis. Assist in lab tests, compiling and analyzing test data. Coordinate equipment design reviews using the standard Design Review and Sign‑Off Checklist. Support equipment sample runs at suppliers and Active to meet TAKT time, internal AQPQ, and customer PPAP requirements. Evaluate trial runs and buy‑offs, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and performance metrics. Conduct training for associates on new equipment and processes, monitoring progress and ensuring timely handover. Record lessons learned and carry them over to future programs. Establish new machine equipment specifications. Collaborate with plant maintenance staff to troubleshoot electrical, electromechanical, pneumatic, electronic, and PLC programming issues. Aid in specifying electrical components procurement. Provide expert opinion on machine and equipment purchase decisions. Participate in root‑cause analysis initiatives and implement solutions to improve OEE. Maintain an open‑issues matrix for assigned projects and tasks, ensuring timely completion. Lead and participate in 8D, 5‑Why, RCA, and CI meetings for customer complaints and failures. Work with maintenance/tooling managers and trades teams to increase machine uptime and conduct RCA on equipment issues. Support the implementation of best practices and develop KPIs for productivity, cost, quality, and safety. Other duties as required. Educational Requirement Bachelor’s or college degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering. Professional Engineer designation from PEO desirable. Project management experience; PMP designation desirable. Qualifications and Experience 5‑10 years of verifiable experience in controls and automation within the automation or manufacturing industry. Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or similar package(s). Ability to read wiring diagrams, electrical/mechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic schematics, and ladder or function block logic. Hands‑on experience with electronics, pneumatics, and electromechanical devices. Experience programming Beckhoff/Allen‑Bradley/Omron/Siemens PLCs and HMIs. Basic wiring work and installation skills; ability to troubleshoot and develop corrective methods. Knowledge and troubleshooting of industrial networks, machine safety circuits, and applications. Understanding of VFD, DC, and Servo drive systems. Proficiency in industrial machine controls, electrical systems, PLC, and HMI programming. Vision system experience an asset. Knowledge of MS Office; Visual Basic and Excel macros highly desirable. Knowledge of MIG spot welding and tube bending processes an asset. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment. Strong technical communication, self‑motivation, and ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work under extreme demands and tight schedules. Flexibility to accept direction changes. Excellent English language, communication, and presentation skills. Basic understanding of WHMIS, IMDS, ergonomics, and safety regulations. Willingness and ability to travel.
