Fellowships are offered on a term basis with salaries and benefits comparable to Research Officers. The current annual PhD recruiting rate is $83,985. Fellows will receive a travel fund to support their work. Project Title The measurement and prediction of structure‑borne noise in timber buildings. The Role Unwanted neighbor noise is a significant annoyance and a key design challenge. The acoustics team at the Construction Research Centre has developed models to predict building acoustics before construction. These models rely on empirical data collected in state‑of‑the‑art laboratories. The successful candidate will learn how to perform vibration measurements using accelerometers and electrodynamic shakers, analyze the resulting data, and contribute to the prediction models. The role will involve laboratory work and data analysis, with emphasis on vibration measurements and transmission loss. The candidate will develop a well‑rounded experience in measurement techniques and model validation. Education PhD in a relevant field of engineering such as acoustic, civil or mechanical engineering. Experience Experience with experimental design and data collection/analysis. Measurement experience using accelerometers is particularly useful. Experience with building acoustic measurements (e.g., transmission loss, sound power, sound intensity) is an asset. Experience working as a member of a research team and working independently. Language Requirements English. Condition of Employment Reliability Status (background verification over 5 years) is required. Who is eligible Fellows will be for two years contingent on satisfactory progress achieved during the first year.
