Do you want to make a meaningful impact within your community and work closely with community members and partners? Do you have strong communication skills and experience in conflict resolution and social work? The Mustard Seed is seeking a Community Support Worker in Medicine Hat.

Reporting to the Community Impact Centre (CIC) Site Lead, this position is responsible for assisting in the development and facilitation of the programs at the Medicine Hat Community Impact Centre. This role oversees the day-to-day facilitation, administration, and coordination of activities in securing, setting up, and supporting the Centre's programs and services. They are responsible for providing clear communication to volunteers, helping community participants in accessing programs and services at the centre, assisting in front desk duties, and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for participants and volunteers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Welcome community members, visitors, and other stakeholders into our centre.
  • Through a person-centered approach, encourage and guide guests to seek resources and services that support them in achieving their goals.
  • Create a safe, healthy, and respectful environment for all community participants accessing our services and programs.
  • Be a supportive and proactive member of the team, including volunteers and other visitors.
  • Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of the work area in addition to participating in daily sanitization of high-touch areas.
  • Assist with site security walks and enforce participant suspensions when necessary.
  • Oversee the day-to-day programmatic operations of the Medicine Hat CIC.
  • Aid in the development, implementation, and facilitation of programs that align with TMS mandate.
  • Assist in ensuring all volunteers have the appropriate training for the programs they are involved in.
  • Lead participants and volunteers involved in the programs.
  • Collect data and generate reports on statistics as required.
  • Build and nurture relationships with external partners and stakeholders in concert with the CIC Site Lead.
  • Ensure all materials and equipment needed for programs are in good working order.
  • Maintain inventory of materials and equipment.
  • Develop and conduct evaluations to determine the effectiveness of program activities.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g., First Aid, ASIST, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, etc.) and attend meetings as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • An undergraduate degree in Social Work or related field or equivalent level of experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in community development initiatives.
  • Frontline experience working with vulnerable populations and program facilitation.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, communicate, and work effectively with a diverse range of people from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Experience developing creative solutions to complex challenges and problems.
  • Demonstrated effective conflict management, networking, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be self-directed and able to work independently as required.
  • Well-developed organizational, time-management, oral and written communication skills, and a high level of attention to detail.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Lifting, sitting, standing, walking, driving personal vehicle, etc. required as part of this role.
  • This position requires flexibility to work some evenings.
  • Minimal to moderate physical effort required.
  • Fast-paced and demanding work environment.
  • Exposure to difficult situations like opioid poisonings, clients under the influence, and potential violence.
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person.
  • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
