The Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC) has an opportunity to improve the health of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta by focusing on upstream efforts and health equity, creating and building on community empowerment and action, and transforming health service delivery to address racism and focus more on determinants of health and prevention. The Indigenous Continuum of Addictions & Mental Wellness (Continuum of Wellness) Grant adopts a strength-based approach to better support Indigenous communities to design and deliver effective ways to address mental health/wellness and addiction issues affecting their communities. The Indigenous Continuum of Wellness aims to address community needs, the ongoing opioid crisis and aims to improve addiction and mental wellness (AMW) supports and services within Indigenous communities to increase the likelihood of recovery, strengthen client experiences and improve the quality of life of those on their recovery journey. The Grant addresses the increasing need of culturally appropriate, Indigenous-led and implemented, recovery-focused addiction and mental wellness programming. In alignment with Alberta’s Recovery Model, the Grant will ensure Indigenous peoples are supported on their recovery journey with evidenced based, integrated and coordinated services, and are provided choices that align with their community’s needs and goals. As a bona fide occupational requirement, and under Section 11 of the Alberta Human Rights Act, only Indigenous applicants will be considered.
Reporting directly to the Manager, the Project Coordinator is the key contact for First Nations communities, Metis Settlements and Indigenous-led organizations as they submit applications for funding through the Continuum of Wellness Grant. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, the Project Coordinator will work collaboratively with project team members and will engage extensively with key contacts in First Nation Communities, Metis Settlements and Indigenous-led organizations to successfully support the development of an application, ensuring all criteria are met. The Project Coordinator will work collaboratively with the Research Associate and the Project team, providing hands-on assistance to applicants, ensuring the applications and project reporting meet the funding requirements as set out in the Grant Agreement. The Coordinator will implement project plans, ensuring project objectives meet the Indigenous Wellness Core's overall goals. The Project Coordinator will act as the project point of contact, providing support to all grantees and the Project team. Bachelor's degree in a health-related discipline AND a minimum of three years of experience working directly with Indigenous Communities. Experience and knowledge of Indigenous health, ways of knowing, relationship building/engagement/community-based approaches to Indigenous Mental Wellness and Substance Use. Successful experience working in multi-cultural environments. Demonstrated experience and well-developed understanding of community-based work in an Indigenous community setting.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, with an ability to handle multiple tasks. Strong written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of project management methodology in a health care setting.
Knowledge of Indigenous research methodologies and sensitivity around the culture and health issues of Indigenous people. Ability to navigate through AHS systems and processes.
