Detailed Overview The Recreation Therapist is accountable to the Manager, Health Services and is responsible for creating a place of learning, healing and caring in accordance with the mission, values and goals of Fraser Health. The Recreation Therapist develops, administers, supervises and evaluates therapeutic recreation and social programs designed to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of the residents; conducts standardized individualized assessments of each resident and develops appropriate therapeutic recreation care plans; supervises activity staff and monitors and evaluates volunteers. Responsibilities Develop goals and objectives, policies and procedures for the Recreation Therapy program. Conduct standardized individualized assessments of each resident and develop appropriate therapeutic recreation care plans; reassess as required. Utilize the individual assessments to develop, plan, organize, coordinate, implement, monitor and evaluate a wide range of therapeutic recreation and social programs designed to meet resident needs. Ensure space, supply and staffing requirements are met for each program. Conduct program activities as appropriate. Participate in the selection of staff, providing input to the Manager; orient new staff and others. Supervise program staff including scheduling and coordinating work assignments; provide input into employee performance evaluations and identify/arrange for education of staff. Administer and account for the therapeutic recreation supplies budget; maintain and order supplies, operating within designated financial limits. Organize fundraising activities. Orient, assign, monitor and evaluate volunteers; develop volunteer assignment and duty descriptions. Liaise with other volunteer coordinators in the community; plan and implement volunteer appreciation activities. Attend and provide reports to regularly scheduled care conferences; chart weekly. Participate in staff/team meetings. Consult and coordinate activities with other staff (e.g., Music Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and Nursing). Coordinate and liaise with community agencies and outside resources to facilitate programming. Monitor the inventory of therapeutic recreation equipment and supplies. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, plus two years’ recent, related experience. Eligible for membership in the B.C. Therapeutic Recreation Association. Skills and Abilities Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to teach, consult and advise. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others both within and outside the organization. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a continuously changing environment and take initiative to ensure effective and timely delivery of services. Demonstrated ability to deal with and promote change. Demonstrated ability to problem solve and effectively deal with conflict situations. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment. Physical ability to carry out duties of the position. Basic computer literacy.
