What Is The Role At Elastic we are building a world‑class experience on the OpenTelemetry (OTel) standard. As Principal Product Manager for OpenTelemetry Instrumentation, you will lead the first mile of our customers’ journey: designing a seamless, powerful developer experience that moves application data into our observability platform using the tools they already love. What You Will Be Doing Own the Vision & Strategy: Define and evangelize the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for our entire OTel instrumentation experience, aligning with broader observability goals. Champion the Developer: Deeply engage developers, SREs, and platform engineers to understand struggles and build solutions they love. Lead in the OpenTelemetry community: Participate in SIGs, contribute to specifications, and build relationships to keep Elastic at the forefront of the standard. Drive Execution: Work closely with engineering, design, and developer relations to translate user needs into clear requirements, scope compelling features, and bring them to successful launch. Define Success: Establish and analyze KPIs focused on instrumentation adoption, time‑to‑value, ease‑of‑use, and data quality. Enable the Ecosystem: Collaborate with marketing, sales, and solution architects to craft differentiated messaging and technical content around using OTel with our platform. Be the Expert: Serve as the internal and external spokesperson, presenting at conferences, webinars, and customer meetings. What You Bring OpenTelemetry Enthusiast: A true believer in open standards who understands APIs, SDKs, Collector, OTLP, and has strong opinions about the future. Technical Product Leader: 3+ years of product management experience in a highly technical, API‑driven, or developer‑focused product. Hands‑on Observability Experience: Former SRE, DevOps, Software Developer, or Solutions Architect with deep instrumentation expertise. Customer‑Obsessed: A track record of turning user insights into successful product roadmaps. Outstanding Communicator: Clear, concise writing and the ability to shift from executive strategy to detailed technical debate. Community‑Minded Collaborator: Experience contributing to open‑source communities and working with cross‑functional teams. Bonus Points Direct contributions to OpenTelemetry or familiarity with Elastic Stack, Datadog, or other major observability vendors. Compensation Base salary only. Typical starting salary range: $154,000—$243,600 CAD. Variable compensation is not part of this role. Benefits Competitive pay based on contributions, not prior salary. Health coverage in many locations. Flexible work locations and schedules. Generous vacation days. Matching up to $2,000 (or local currency equivalent) for financial donations and service. Up to 40 hours per year for volunteer projects. Minimum 16 weeks of parental leave.
