Job Summary & Requirements RVH is seeking interested nursing, paramedic, undergraduate medical, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy students to join our Enhanced Extern Program. This is an exciting employment opportunity for these students to work in a clinical environment where they can develop and consolidate competencies to prepare to transition into a future registered role upon completion of their studies. Successful candidates will gain valuable patient care experience and build connections within an interprofessional environment in a hospital setting. The Clinical Extern may be considered for career opportunities upon graduation and licensure. QUALIFICATIONS Must be enrolled in one of the following programs: Registered Nurse (RN) – completed first year of an accredited baccalaureate nursing program Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) – completed first semester of an accredited nursing program Undergraduate Medical – final year, or recent Canadian Medical Graduate awaiting residency Respiratory Therapy – 2nd or 3rd year of a Diploma Program Paramedic – 2nd year of an approved Paramedic Program Occupational Therapy – enrolled in a program Physiotherapy – enrolled in a program Current BLS certification required Completion of any orientation and mandatory training during onboarding Evidence of good academic standing with enrolled program Successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements Competencies Effective communication with patients, families, staff, physicians, students, and volunteers Teamwork and ability to seek guidance and consultation Safe, high‑quality, compassionate care consistent with formal education and organizational mission Critical thinking, clinical judgment, problem solving Respect and dignity for all persons Excellent organization and time‑management Commitment to professional growth and continuous quality improvement DEFINING DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Practice under the direct or indirect supervision of an appropriate healthcare professional (e.g., RN, RPN, Respiratory Therapist) Assist with activities of daily living to optimize patient independence and functioning. Activities may include: Assistance with ADLs such as feeding, toileting, bathing, dressing Mobility assistance (lifting, turning, positioning, transfer, ambulation) Skin integrity measures Answering call bells Vital signs, height, weight measurement Comfort measures and participation in comfort rounds Contribution to care planning under nursing supervision Companionship and social engagement Reporting changes in patient status or safety concerns Falls risk assessment, pain assessment, Braden Scale, CAM assessment Participate in clinical rotations across specialty units including Cardiac Renal Unit, Cancer Palliative Unit, Emergency Department, Inpatient Medicine Units (Stroke, Respiratory, Seniors Care, Transitional Care, MSSU & RVH Rotary), Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Surgical Inpatient Units, Surgery Prep/PACU, ICU Adapt to rotating shifts covering days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays While we thank all applicants, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
