Research Grants and Contracts Facilitator

Duties:
Reporting to the Manager, Research Development, the Research Grants and Contracts Facilitator performs high-level professional work related to grant seeking, grant and contract administration, and coordination of grant management activities. This position acts as the first point of contact for VIU researchers to provide professional advice and guidance to facilitate the development of competitive research grants, identify and match researchers with funding opportunities and potential collaborators, assist with the development of applications; develop and deliver capacity-building workshops; help organize other research-related professional development programming; and support post-award administration, as required. This position is aligned with research in the social sciences and health disciplines and will provide back up assistance for research contracts as needed.
The Facilitator:
- Develops and maintains expert knowledge of Tri-Agency funding programs including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and other funding opportunities, policies, program criteria and application procedures.
- Identifies opportunities outside Tri-Agencies including funding from philanthropic organizations and applied grants.
- Facilitates interactions between researchers and building of team grants when appropriate.
- On behalf of VIU, assists researchers to understand and comply with VIU policies and procedures, guidelines and regulations as per the Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration and with other sponsor obligations.
- Acts as a liaison between granting agency program officers and project leaders to obtain information, solve complex problems using risk assessment knowledge, and prepare and send additional documentation as required.
- Engages with faculty to understand their research and funding needs to facilitate the identification and support of collaborative cross Faculty research proposals.
- Reviews and determines eligibility issues with respect to the researcher, subject matter and sponsor.
- Actively participates in the development of research proposals as administrative lead.
- Develops, reviews and implements administrative procedures and controls for grant and contract application and management processes.
- Assists the researcher, along with the Director, Research Services, to understand grant compliance requirements and support post-award management, as required.
- Contributes substantially to the development and revision of research policy and procedures as required.
- Works collaboratively with the Director of Graduate Studies and Student Research and other key VIU contacts to act as a backup administrator for Mitacs student programs, CEWIL iHub, and other student research programs.
- Supports the development of VIU research centre and institute proposals.
- Liaises with personnel from VIU service departments and Faculties as needed in the administration of research funding and subsequent awards including Financial Services, Human Resources, Payroll, Purchasing, and the Centre for Experiential Learning.
- Establishes and maintains superior working relationships with VIU researchers, VIU administrators, Directors of Research Centers and Institutes, and external stakeholders.
- Assists with the collection and compilation of research performance metrics for internal and external reporting.
- Builds research capacity at VIU by convening and delivering workshops and presentations, information sessions, and individual consultations.
- Participates in professional development activities to continue professional growth and learning.
- Ensures accuracy and maintenance of the research records in the research management system (Romeo).
- Functions as a member of a team focused on proactive, efficient and customer service-oriented workflow and office procedures.
- Develops and supports the use of resources for faculty development (EDGE program hosted in D2L).
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree with a research component or significant grant facilitation and management experience and three to five years' experience in grant facilitation in the post-secondary sector. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Superior attention to detail.
- Fluent knowledge of the Canadian post-secondary research funding landscape.
- Strong understanding of the grant life cycle process including grant seeking, grant writing, and grant management.
- Superior communication skills (including writing and editing).
- Experience with collaborative, community-based and/or applied research.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD or a combination of graduate degrees.
- Experience with the Romeo/Cayuse grants management platform.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities.
