Hours of Work: Fridays 2pm-10pm, Saturdays 9am-12pm (11 hours/week, 22 hours bi-weekly)

Term Length: up to 8 months

This position assists in the delivery of arena programs including on-ice leadership, teaching classes as required, assisting with organizing special events, and communicating with instructors, participants, parents and supervisors. This position requires an energetic, outgoing and responsible individual who implements programs which are instructional, fun, exciting and maintain a safe environment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Implement, oversee and deliver the Greater Victoria Active Communities Learn to Skate program.
  • Ensure report cards are completed and instruct lessons when required.
  • Maintain on-ice presence during lessons and public skates.
  • Discuss issues and concerns with parents regarding classes and programs.
  • Assist the Recreation Coordinator with class additions, cancellations and printing of daily lesson class lists and other administrative duties.
  • Assist with the organization, coordination, and scheduling of arena drop-in ice programs for all age groups when required.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to skate staff including instructors, skate patrol and skate shop attendants.
  • Assist and lead staff orientation and training of skate staff and volunteers.
  • Act as a liaison between the general public and Panorama Recreation.
  • Ensure proper documentation is completed for accidents and incidents.
  • Provide routine reports on arena activities such as attendance and simple statistics.
  • Work with the Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Assistant on coordinating and implementing special events.
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and standards of the CRD.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Key Skills & Abilities
  • Customer service and public relations skills required.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership abilities are essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in skating instruction and supervision.
  • Ability to use sound judgment while creating a positive, enthusiastic & fun environment.
  • Excellent customer service, communication (both verbal and written), interpersonal and public relations skills and experience are required.
Qualifications
  • High School Graduation
  • A minimum of 2 years' directly related experience
Certifications
  • Acceptable criminal record check. The applicant/incumbent is required to undergo a criminal record check to work in this position and to report to their supervisor if any criminal charges are laid against them that may be related to their employment.
  • Emergency First Aid
  • National Coaching Certification Level 2 (or equivalent)
