The Labour & Employee Relations Advisor operates as part of the Labour & Employee Relations team within the broader HR team. The role is responsible for providing guidance, direction and support to the Human Resources and Operations teams over various branches on matters relating to labour & employee relations, including but not limited to grievance management, training, implementation of collective agreements and general best practices. This position will also be responsible for general administration relating to labour relations matters and will ensure adherence to the Company’s policies and procedures.As a Labour and Employee Relations Advisor, you will impact in the following ways:Acts as the first point of contact for site HR and management team for all labour & employee relations mattersSupports Management team with ongoing coaching, mentoring and knowledge to effectively manage team members within a unionized environmentCoaches and guides Human Resources team members on matters relating to labour relationsParticipates and assists in the collective bargaining process; includes mandate development, preparation of materials, proposals, and collective agreement implementationProvides general support including but not limited to assisting with collective agreement interpretation and application, research, preparing and/or reviewing general communicationProvides labour relations advice to management and human resources in addressing initiatives with possible LR impactCollects, analyzes, and interprets information such as case law, reviewing precedents, arbitral jurisprudence and gathering related documentation as requiredTrack and analyze grievances for trends, potential issues with language; identifies opportunities for improvement. Generates grievance reports for regional management and senior leaders.Contributes to the development of labour relations best practice learning and support for leadership to promote positive union-management relationsCo-Chairs Labour Management meetings and supports/manages overall labour management relationship.Participates in projects, providing labour relations support to a variety of stakeholder groups.Supports the Labour and Employee Relations team with information and evidence gathering required to respond to various employee matters that arise, including HRTO cases, MOL complaints and disputes.Some intermittent provincial travel may be requiredPerforms other duties as requiredRequirements:Post-secondary degree in business/human resources/industrial relations or an acceptable combination of education and experienceHuman Resource designation (i.e. CHRL) preferred3-5 years of Labour Relations experience in a unionized environment, with an emphasis on significant multi-site collective agreement locations.Demonstrated knowledge/experience supporting collective agreement negotiationsStrong knowledge/experience with interpretation of collective agreements.Demonstrated ability to provide advice and counsel to business while using ability to influenceBroad knowledge of employment legislation: Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, etc.Demonstrated ability to analyze data and interpret informationDemonstrated experience in being innovative, taking initiative, and being proactive.Strong consultation/facilitation, analytical, communication and strategic thinking skills are required.At Extendicare, we believe that working as a team creates an environment that allows us to reach our potential.
