Our Policy & Planning department is seeking a permanent, full-time Staff Lawyer. Staff Lawyers, Policy & Legal Services are responsible for the research and development of legal and policy issues for the Benchers, Committees, Task Forces, and Law Society departments. The nature of the work requires frequent contact with Benchers and senior staff and involves creativity and insight. Work is frequently provided to Committees, Task Forces and Benchers for decision. In addition to the general responsibilities of the role, the holder of this position will be responsible for advising on legal and policy issues arising from the Law Society’s efforts to advance reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

This position is open to persons of Indigenous ancestry. Candidates for the position will be required to provide proof of Indigenous ancestry.

The duties of this position include:

  • Providing research, analysis, advice and recommendations on key issues and policies affecting the Law Society’s regulatory responsibilities and operations.
  • Advancing the Law Society’s efforts towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in collaboration with the Senior Advisor, Indigenous Engagement through:
    • Providing policy support to the Truth & Reconciliation Advisory Committee;
    • Providing policy support to the Senior Advisor, Indigenous Engagement in implementing the policy aspects of the Indigenous Engagement in Regulatory Matters Task Force Report recommendations and otherwise as required;
    • Providing policy and legal advice and recommendations in regard to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Providing policy analysis on programs and proposals
  • Providing opinions on points of law
  • Making presentations to Benchers, Committees, and Task forces
  • Drafting letters on Law Society positions to outside organizations
  • Responding to questions or inquiries from Benchers on Law Society policy development
  • Drafting agendas and minutes of meetings, and attendance at meetings
  • Responding to questions or inquiries from Law Society staff about programs and policy positions
  • Such other duties as the Director of Policy & Practice may require.

Qualifications:

  • A member in good standing of the Law Society of BC or eligible for membership.
  • A minimum of five years of practice experience.
  • Experience in policy development, strategic planning, development of legislation and/or regulations, and/or government relations.
  • Highly analytical with superior abilities in legal research and writing, and excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous history, laws, and cultures in British Columbia.
  • Strong connection to the Indigenous legal community and the wider Indigenous community in British Columbia.
  • Ability to work co-operatively within diverse teams, work groups and across an organization to achieve group and organizational goals and to engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds with diverse views.

The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society and Professional Employees Association apply to this position. This position is within the Policy & Legal Services job classification and the salary range for this position is $133,740.30 to $161,653.86.
