Software Engineering Manager

- Manchester city centre (3 days a week WFH + flexible start times: 7am -10am)
Lead a cross-functional team of local and remote Software Developers and Test Engineers delivering high quality software for a multi-million pound, microservices platform, built with modern technologies.
While this is primarily a hands-off role, it is essential you understand modern software engineering and quality assurance best practices enabling you to build a high performing team.
Job PurposeYou will be guiding and motivating your team to hit aligned objectives while focusing on high quality software that gives a first-class user experience. This will span the entire lifecycle of the software, from design and coding to deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.
Job Duties- Lead and manage a high performing agile team of Software Developers and QA.
- Provide guidance, support, and career development for team members, helping them grow their skills and advance in their careers.
- Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and provide feedback to help team members improve and succeed.
- Recruit new team members and ensure a smooth onboarding process.
- Take accountability for the planning, delivering team's backlog and the overall SDLC.
- Partner with a Product Manager to balance new product development, operational excellence and defects.
- Embed a team-first mindset ensuring individuals focus on working together, sharing knowledge, and supporting one another ensuring a sustainable pace of delivery.
- Demonstrate continuous improvement through metrics and storytelling.
- Take ownership of the technical direction of the team working with the Architects.
- Ensure that the engineering efforts are aligned with the company.
- Participate in or facilitate code reviews and design discussions to maintain high standards of quality and consistency.
- Metrics driven approach to delivery.
- Experience of leading agile teams, managing and coaching team members.
- Demonstrable understanding of modern software engineering and quality assurance best practices.
- Experience mentoring and coaching team members.
- Hybrid remote working (2 days a week in Manchester office).

With over 300 staff, 120 of whom are developers, this division of the world's largest independent bookmaker, develops and manages highly complex systems that process the thousands of transactions that take place every second, and handles the massive amounts of data and calculations related to odds and statistics in the sport betting space. Their systems span web, mobile and embedded applications for self-service terminals.
