Product Development Engineer

Product Development Engineer (PDE) will be responsible for establishing and validating the product design on multiple programs within a Plasman Customer Platform from award to launch. The responsibilities include interfacing with internal process experts and influencing customer engineers to optimize the design to achieve the quality, cost, appearance, and performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Function as the main point of contact related to engineering issues and solutions with customers.
  • Collaborate with Plasman Process Experts to establish Product and Process Best Practices and refine them as technology advancements occur.
  • Provide design direction based on Plasman & OEM best practices and internal lessons learned.
  • Provide guidance on cutting edge technology related to the Plasman processes.
  • Develop customized solution if necessary while adhering to standard Plasman best practices.
  • Review GD&T and Gage Strategy to ensure robust design interfaces and verify variation can achieve fit and finish targets.
  • Work with multiple disciplines, incorporating cross-functional requirements in Product Design while satisfying Customer expectations.
  • Work on multiple customer programs representing Plasman Product Design and Manufacturing ideology internally and with Customers.
  • Schedule and hold manufacturing feasibility meetings ensuring proper representation of multiple disciplines.
  • Support with technical representation through the ECN process during development and mass production.
  • Interpret CAE analysis and apply design improvements to meet performance and fit/finish requirements.
  • Analyze 3D CAD models and digital validation techniques.
  • Develop internal DVP&R, ability to understand, interpret, and negotiate customer DVP&R's.
  • Root cause analysis techniques and organized problem-solving during product development and all build phases until SOP.
  • Responsible of Injection tools/product maturation at toolmaker, with support from tooling engineer assigned to trials at toolmaker (validate product against CAD, dimensional, aspect).
  • Lead basic tuning at Toolmaker trials (having fasteners, components, mating parts, etc).
  • PDE will be one of the approvers for tool transfer to plant, with Product Engineering Manager and Plant representative.
  • Responsible for first tooling trials at the plant, with support from tooling engineer and Injection team and planners.
  • Responsible for product maturation, comply with customer GD&T and specifications during build phases.
  • Responsible for preparing product for customer reviews (cubing, ETAC, Nominal buck, etc).
  • Responsible for leading tuning on product or injection tools to achieve specifications. This includes mockups to validate tunings.
  • PDE will be responsible for product maturation until SOP +3 months, gradually reducing his involvement after 3 months. This workload will be mange by Product Engineering Manager.
  • Responsible for maintaining BOM and supporting SAP implementation regarding PN and Engineering levels (BOM).
  • Responsible of Product Engineering hand over to plant, working with Quality department and PM.
  • Advocate and foster a team environment within both the department and throughout the division.
  • Support internal continuous improvement activities during management system audit events, provide evidence in support of conformance with applicable standards and procedures, and participate in corrective action activities as necessary.
  • Promote an atmosphere of teamwork at all times
  • Ensure that a clean and safe work environment is always maintained.
  • Complete any other duties as assigned.
  • Assist in any way to any employee, necessary to promote a successful operation emphasizing customer satisfaction.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/OR DESIGNATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a secondary school diploma or equivalent.
  • Recognized Engineering Technical Diploma in related area.
  • Certification in Program Management will be considered an asset.

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 10+ years Product Engineering and Design/Development experience preferably at Tier One supplier level.
  • Strong knowledge in tooling and in Integrated Manufacturing and Design related to both OEM and Manufacturing facility.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbal.
  • Must be well skilled in Microsoft Office programs, specifically Microsoft Project.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Intimate understanding of injection molding process and tool design.
  • Good knowledge of plastics painting and plating and assembly.
  • Well-rounded experience and knowledge in Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of Fixtures functionality and design used for quality and work-in-process checks.
  • Vehicle Integration experience for multiple exterior components including but not limited to wheel flares, rockers, spoilers, door molding, etc.
  • Business acumen and ability to balance technical and business imperatives.
  • Understanding of expectations detailed through Organization Statements, Standards, Visions, Policies and Procedures (i.e. Mission, Values, Code of Conduct, Operational, Quality, and Environmental Health & Safety) as referenced in Employee Handbooks and communicated through Orientation and/or other training awareness opportunities
  • Ability to perform well in high pressure situations
  • Meets expectation rating (rating score of 2 or 3) in all applicable Competencies as defined in the Performance Management Process.
  • Capable of independent travel to, from and within designated regions
  • Access to reliable transportation
