Your role:

CBC Calgary is looking for a creative, dynamic and digital-savvy Executive Producer of Audio and Programming to oversee podcasting and radio current affairs and help lead our ambitious newsroom.

As Executive Producer, you will lead the teams who produce all of our current affairs programs and podcasts including any special programming such as on-site remotes as well as breaking news and planned specials such as elections and seasonal events. You manage the recruitment and development of staff. You guide and support on-air talent.

You are a key leader of CBC Calgary and are keen to collaborate with the rest of the leadership team. You're a nimble and visionary programmer, your leadership style inspires others to experiment and challenge traditional thinking about programming and content creation. You understand the unique social and cultural communities of Calgary and Southern Alberta

You are a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of your decision-making. Your decisions and leadership are based on specific goals which are clearly communicated to your teams. You will work to develop a clear identity for our programs and for the station as a whole.

You are naturally collaborative. Your ability to build relationships helps ensure the success of your teams and the station alike. You will develop the next wave of journalists, hosts and programmers.

You champion team success, and find creative solutions when issues arise. The people who work on your teams know what you expect of them. You are a strong motivational leader, capable of managing people as well as complex journalistic and legal situations.

Key Tasks:
  • Responsible for overseeing the development and review of all CBC Calgary radio programs, podcasts, and emerging content formats.
  • Responsible for the development and coaching of hosts, journalists and leaders as it relates to strategic content development.
  • Oversees the journalism involved in all audio content.
  • Identifies and develops emerging talent within and outside of CBC News.
  • Reviews and redevelops existing local programs, working closely with program teams to align with strategic goals, conducting structured program reviews and redevelopment plans.
  • Provides regular feedback to employees
  • Makes daily staffing and scheduling decisions in collaboration with our scheduling department
  • Co-ordinates, programs and executes live and breaking news specials.
  • Closely monitors audience and industry trends, and develops ideas and approaches positioned against future content opportunities.
  • Highly skilled in audio, video, digital and social content production.
  • Able to shepherd our audio products into a video and streaming future.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • A university degree or equivalent.
  • Ten years' editorial experience of which three must involve leading program teams in a major market.
  • Proven experience working with and developing hosts, producers and other journalists.
  • A strong team leader with the ability to inspire others.
  • Can interpret and adapt to audience trends and data.
  • Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
  • Superior writing, editorial and production skills. Interest in cross-platform media production.
  • Strong understanding of CBC's journalistic standards and practices and their applications in a wide variety of contexts.
  • An ability to choose relevant, audience focused stories, which reflect issues being discussed by the general public.
  • Quick to react and respond to breaking stories.
  • Demonstrated skills in the area of conflict resolution, mentoring, talent recognition and development.
  • A commitment to reflecting community and diversity.
