Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Strategic Risk Management Leader to join our team at UBC. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to our Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Internal Assurance (IA) functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enterprise Risk Management
    • Develop and implement an integrated risk management framework to identify, assess, and mitigate strategic risks across the university.
    • Build a robust ERM infrastructure by strengthening methodologies, systems, and tools, and improving internal and external relationships.
    • Provide leadership for an ERM program focused on identifying strategic risks and facilitating capabilities within the university to develop suitable risk mitigation activities.
    • Support the university with continuous risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and regular risk reporting.
  • Internal Assurance
    • Develop a clear IA vision and roadmap to deliver on the mandate and value provided by IA.
    • Enhance the perception of IA's value-add to the university by reviewing processes and practices for developing a consultative and risk-based audit universe.
    • Develop practices and advise management and the Board on the effectiveness of the university's overall control environment in non-financial matters such as risk prevention and value creation.
    • Balance traditional IA responsibilities with emerging risks through integration with ERM.
    • Strengthen relationships across the university, through increased networking and advocacy, and with a goal of providing assurance around the implementation of key controls and mitigating controls.
  • Leadership and Supervision
    • Lead a team of internal assurance and enterprise risk management professionals.
    • Provide leadership and direction on measurable Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) to measure strategic risks on an ongoing basis and provide live and relevant information for decision-making.
Requirements
  • Education
    • University degree in a relevant discipline.
    • Graduate degree preferred.
  • Experience
    • Minimum 10 years of experience in a senior-level position related to internal assurance, audit, and risk management.
  • Skills and Qualifications
    • Ability to lead in the development, implementation, and maintenance of an integrated risk management framework.
    • Proven experience in innovation, governance, and overseeing the compliance status and risk exposure for higher-education institutions.
    • Extensive IA experience, across both financial and operational audits.
    • Understanding of how to align IA activities to an ERM program.
    • Proven experience helping an organization achieve its strategic objectives.
    • Prior experience in working with and developing strong reporting relationships with Board members.
    • Prior experience with working with multiple organizational risk functions and knowledge of how to coordinate with these functions.
    • Exceptional collaboration and interpersonal skills.
    • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives and commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
