Main Purpose & Function
The Sewers Utility Drafter is part of a team responsible for the renewal, design, construction and management of the City's integrated sewage and drainage network.
The position is responsible for creating and maintaining sewer infrastructure construction drawings and as-built information; performing survey work; and providing research, technical information and responding to inquiries to the public, private companies, outside agencies and other City branches.
The position reports to the Engineering Assistant IV and works with groups across the department, including Sewer Operations, Water Design, Utilities Design and other entities such as 3rd party utilities and Metro Vancouver.
Specific Duties & ResponsibilitiesCreates sewer design construction drawings using GIS/AutoCAD/TopoBase environment using departmental paper records and electronic databasesUpdates GIS as-built informationResearches and provides technical and other information regarding sewer and water infrastructure for the public, city staff and private companies, providing written correspondence as requiredUndertakes quality control processes related to existing GIS dataMakes recommendations to improve branch processes and information access needsCarries out survey work to collect as-built field information as requiredCarries out confined space entry proceduresCarries out design and construction technical assignmentsCommunicates and corresponds with the public, private companies, outside agencies and other City branchesOther duties/responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience:Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by technical courses related to the work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Experience preparing AutoCAD construction drawings in Civil 3D.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Good knowledge of municipal design and construction of sewer systemsKnowledge of surveyor methods and techniquesWorking knowledge of standard engineering concepts and terminologyStrong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skills with a focus on customer serviceAbility to perform accurate survey work, draft simple designs, and make routine office and field engineering computationsAbility to read and interpret engineering plans and understand specificationsAbility to problem solve with accuracy in a technical environment;Ability to work efficiently in a team environment with little supervision and under tight time linesAbility to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholdersAbility to work outdoors in inclement weatherProficient in the use of software applications, geographical information systems and databases such as TopoBase, Hansen, AutoCAD Map 3D, and Civil 3DAbility to arrange suitable transportation to various work locations
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
