Location: Fort St. James RCMP Detachment

Shift Times: On-Call - Days, Evenings, and Overnights

Position Summary: Reporting to the RCMP Member overseeing Cell Block Operations, the Detention Guard's main duty is to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in custody while handling other necessary tasks.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Monitor prisoners regularly, potentially utilizing Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV).
  • Support RCMP member(s) in prisoner searches (training provided).
  • Manage meals, document prisoner activities, and maintain a logbook.
  • Keep cells clean and orderly, arranging janitorial support when needed.
  • Report damages or repairs to cells.
  • Conduct cell searches before and after occupancy.
  • Maintain cellblock security by ensuring locked doors.
  • Secure cellblock keys.
  • Safely store prisoners' personal belongings.
  • Monitor fire safety and follow fire orders.
  • Handle laundry items as needed.
  • Dispense approved medications to prisoners under RCMP Officer supervision.
  • Follow guidelines for prisoners with suicidal tendencies.
  • Adhere to specific duties outlined in Unit Supplemental Orders.

Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Minimum age requirement: 21 years.
  • Hold a valid Occupational First Aid level 1 certification or equivalent.
  • Willingness to obtain RCMP and Public Works Reliability Clearance.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English.
  • Meet vision and mobility standards.
  • Possess basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrate composure and discretion under pressure.
  • Collaborate effectively with others.
  • Openness to required detention guard training, including WHMIS training.
  • Show independence, conscientiousness, enthusiasm, and reliability.
